Why So Mexico was born in 2019 from a memorable mishap at a Mexico City taco stand. Sofia Mendoza-Clarke, visiting her grandmother, watched yet another tourist order “tacos with no spice” and ask for a fork. The vendor’s bewildered expression – a perfect blend of confusion, amusement, and mild horror – sparked an idea.
Having grown up straddling two cultures, Sofia realized how many “whys” about Mexico remained unanswered for curious outsiders. Why do Mexicans celebrate death? Why is “ahorita” such a flexible concept? Why does everything taste better with lime?
She started documenting these cultural quirks on a simple blog, initially just for her British friends.
Mission: To bridge cultural gaps through humor, honesty, and hunger-inducing content, showing Mexico as it truly is – complex, vibrant, and endlessly fascinating.
Values: Authenticity over stereotypes, respect for traditions while embracing modernity, making cultural education accessible and entertaining, supporting local Mexican businesses and artisans through our content.
Today, Why So Mexico serves as a cultural translator for anyone who’s ever wondered “why?” about this magnificent country, one article, recipe, and badly pronounced Spanish word at a time.
