Mexico City, Mexico – The Mexico-Toluca Interurban Train, known as ‘El Insurgente,’ is set to begin operations to the Observatorio station in Mexico City in January 2026. This was confirmed by Clara Brugada, the Head of Government of Mexico City, who highlighted the crucial connectivity this will bring to the capital’s public transportation system.
Observatorio to Become a Major Transportation Hub
The Observatorio terminal is poised to become a significant intermodal transfer center for Mexico City. Following three years and four months of modernization work, the entire Line 1 of the Collective Transportation System Metro (STC) fully reopened on November 16, 2025, with trains now operating from Pantitlán to Observatorio.
During a press conference, Brugada emphasized the importance of connecting the Metro CDMX with ‘El Insurgente.’ The Interurban Train will arrive at the Observatorio Complex, where it will link with the train service originating from Toluca. This station, which extends to Pantitlán, is expected to be a pivotal point in integrating these transportation systems.
President Sheinbaum’s Announcement Confirmed
Brugada reiterated an earlier announcement by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who stated that the Interurban Train project would be inaugurated to Observatorio by the end of January 2026. “On Line 1, we will soon receive the Interurban Train, El Insurgente, which is scheduled for January,” Brugada stated. She added, “The Interurban, which the President already announced yesterday when it will start operating and will arrive in Mexico City, and a set of works that are being carried out in a metropolitan way.”
The Head of Government underscored that this integrated system will enable full communication across the city from west to east and vice versa, benefiting millions of people who traverse the capital and its metropolitan area. This initiative, she noted, is part of a new metropolitan mobility reality, emphasizing the importance of projects like ‘El Insurgente’ and the Interurban Train.
“In January, it will arrive in the city, and it will arrive at the Observatorio Complex, where we will have the Toluca train. We have this enormous station, the Observatorio station that reaches Pantitlán. So, from Toluca, now in this Integrated Transportation System, one can reach Chalco. That is to say, one takes the Insurgente Train, takes Metro Line 1, arrives at Pantitlán, takes Line A, and from Line A arrives at Santa Marta, and from there also takes the new Elevated Trolleybus, which reaches Chalco,” Brugada elaborated, detailing the extensive connectivity.
