Mexico City, Mexico – Residents of Mexico City and its metropolitan area faced the most significant inflation during the Christmas season, with the consumer price index reaching 4.5%, according to a report published on Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

Inflation Unevenly Distributed Across Mexico

While national inflation reached 3.7% in the first half of December, after peaking at 4% in the second half of November, the impact of this economic challenge, often referred to as the ‘tax on the poor,’ was not uniformly distributed among the population.

Mexico City’s Inflation Outpaces National Average

The inflation rate in Mexico City and its surrounding areas accelerated to 4.5%. This figure represents the highest rate among the seven regions into which Inegi divides the country. Furthermore, this marks the eighth consecutive fortnight that Mexico City’s inflation has remained above the national average.

The data highlights a persistent economic pressure on the capital’s inhabitants, particularly as the holiday season approaches, when consumer spending typically increases.

Broader Economic Context and Other News

The Inegi report also touched upon other economic indicators and national news items, including:

  • Private Investment in Housing Weakens: A decline in private sector investment in housing was noted, indicating potential challenges in the real estate market.
  • Mexico Not a Trampoline for Asian Products: This statement suggests efforts to counter perceptions or practices where Mexico might be used as a transit point for goods from Asia.
  • Judge Dismisses Amparo for César Duarte: A legal development concerning former governor César Duarte, where a judge rejected an amparo (a legal protection).
  • Preventive Detention for “Chiquimarco” in Family Violence Case: News regarding a legal decision in a family violence case.
  • Tragic Plane Crash: A report on a plane crash with multiple victims, including a child, a doctor, and three marines.

These diverse reports underscore a dynamic period in Mexico, encompassing economic challenges, legal proceedings, and tragic events, all occurring as the country approaches the end of the year.

The persistent high inflation in Mexico City remains a key concern for policymakers and residents alike, as it directly impacts purchasing power and living standards.
