Mexico City is bracing for a significant drop in temperatures on Wednesday, December 24, and Thursday, December 25, prompting authorities to issue a cold weather alert. The Secretariat of Integral Risk Management and Civil Protection (SGIRPC) has urged residents to take precautions during Christmas Eve and Christmas Day festivities.

Six Boroughs Under Yellow Alert for Cold

At least six boroughs, predominantly located in the southern part of Mexico City, will be under a Yellow Alert due to anticipated cold temperatures and frosts. Minimum temperatures are forecast to range between 4 and 6 degrees Celsius during the early morning hours of Wednesday.

The affected boroughs are:

  • Álvaro Obregón
  • Cuajimalpa
  • Magdalena Contreras
  • Milpa Alta
  • Tlalpan
  • Xochimilco

The coldest period is expected between 4:00 AM and 8:00 AM on Wednesday.

Recommendations for Christmas and New Year’s Cold

In response to the expected low temperatures, especially during the evenings when many families gather for Christmas dinner, Mexico City’s Civil Protection has issued a series of recommendations:

  • Dress warmly: Wear several layers of clothing.
  • Cover mouth and nose: To avoid inhaling cold air.
  • Stay hydrated and nourished: Consume fruits, vegetables, plenty of liquids, and hot beverages.
  • Ensure ventilation: If using heaters, maintain good ventilation.
  • Avoid fireworks: Do not use pyrotechnics.
  • Seek medical attention: Visit a health center if feeling unwell.
  • Protect pets: Keep pets safe from the cold.

Chance of Atypical Christmas Rain

Mexico City has experienced atypical rainfall during Christmas week, and there is a possibility of light, isolated precipitation between Wednesday, December 24, and Thursday, December 25. Civil Protection advises residents to take precautions for potential wet conditions.

Official Statements and Further Information

The SGIRPC emphasized the importance of public awareness and adherence to safety guidelines to mitigate risks associated with the cold weather. They continue to monitor weather conditions and will provide updates as necessary.

This cold front is part of a broader weather pattern affecting the country, with other regions also experiencing significant temperature drops. Authorities are coordinating efforts to ensure public safety and well-being during the holiday season.
