A 17-year-old, whose identity has not been fully disclosed, was apprehended yesterday evening after allegedly discharging a firearm within a cemetery located in the Álvaro Obregón borough of Mexico City. The incident, which occurred on December 23, 2025, resulted in two individuals sustaining injuries.

Police Respond to Gunfire in La Mexicana

According to a statement released by the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) of Mexico City, uniformed officers were conducting routine preventative patrols at the intersection of Vasco de Quiroga and Paso a la Alhaja avenues in the La Mexicana neighborhood. At approximately 9:10 PM, they reported hearing gunshots, prompting an immediate response to the interior of a nearby cemetery to investigate the source of the noise.

Upon arrival, officers discovered a woman with a wound to her right side (right costal arch area) and a man who had sustained injuries to his arm and knee. Emergency medical services were requested; however, both injured individuals were transported to a hospital by their own means for specialized medical attention.

Suspect Detained, Weapon Seized

The teenager, who was identified by witnesses at the scene as the individual responsible for the gunfire, was promptly detained by authorities. Following a preventative search conducted in accordance with police protocol, officers recovered a short-barreled firearm from the suspect. The weapon was found to be empty of live cartridges.

Subsequently, the young man was informed of his legal rights and transferred to the custody of the corresponding public prosecutor’s agent. The public prosecutor will now be responsible for determining his legal status and pursuing further action in the case.

Investigation Underway

The incident has drawn attention to ongoing concerns regarding violence and gun control in the city. Authorities have not yet released details regarding the motive behind the shooting or the relationship, if any, between the alleged shooter and the victims. The investigation is ongoing, and further information is expected to be released as it becomes available.

This event follows other recent incidents of violence in Mexico City, including a shooting outside the judicial power building and a fatal incident in the Zona Rosa area. These occurrences underscore the challenges faced by local authorities in maintaining public safety.

The SSC has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the security of the city’s residents and visitors, emphasizing the importance of rapid response to emergency calls and proactive patrolling. The department continues to work towards reducing crime rates and addressing the root causes of violence within the metropolitan area.
