Mexico City, January 8, 2026 – The Mexico City government has announced upcoming maintenance works for Metro Lines A, B, and 12, three of the system’s most heavily used routes. This follows an historic investment of nearly 41 billion pesos for the complete renovation of Line 3, announced yesterday, January 7, 2026. The aim is to ensure faster, safer, and more comfortable journeys for the more than 1 million daily users who commute across the city.

Major Investment for Metro System

The announcement comes as part of a comprehensive renovation plan for the Mexico City Metro system. Yesterday, an unprecedented investment of nearly 41 billion pesos was revealed for the complete overhaul of Line 3, which runs from Indios Verdes to Universidad. This significant financial commitment underscores the government’s dedication to modernizing the city’s public transportation infrastructure.

“We want faster, safer, and more comfortable journeys for the more than 1 million daily users who travel to the north and south of the city,” stated the Mexico City government in a press release.

Lines A, B, and 12 to be Modernized

Following the extensive renovation of Line 3, attention will turn to Lines A, B, and 12. These three lines are among the most frequently used by residents, connecting various parts of the city and facilitating daily commutes for hundreds of thousands of people. The government recognizes the critical role these lines play in the city’s mobility and aims to bring them up to modern standards.

No Immediate Closure Dates Announced

As of yesterday, January 7, 2026, specific dates for the commencement of renovation works on Lines A, B, and 12 have not yet been set. The Mexico City government plans to hold a working meeting to define the timeline and methodology for these interventions. This proactive approach aims to minimize disruption for commuters while ensuring the effectiveness of the upgrades.

Minimizing Disruption for Commuters

To mitigate the impact on daily commuters, the Mexico City government is exploring strategies to conduct most of the maintenance work during nighttime hours. “Perhaps night schedules will be affected, and that is where the support of the RTP (Red de Transporte de Pasajeros) will come in, so that it does not imply closing the metro service all day,” said the Head of Government, Clara Brugada.

Brugada further added that if complete closures become unavoidable, they would be scheduled during weekends or holiday periods. This approach reflects a commitment to prioritizing the needs of the city’s residents and ensuring continuity of service as much as possible.

Line 3 Renovation Details

While details for Lines A, B, and 12 are still being finalized, the renovation of Line 3 is set to be comprehensive. Previous reports indicated that works on Line 3 would begin in December 2026 and are expected to last approximately one year, involving partial closures of stations to carry out rehabilitation work on electrical, hydraulic, and signaling systems, as well as the modernization of fixed installations and accessibility features. The modernization also includes the acquisition of 45 new trains equipped with Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) technology. The current state of the metro system faces challenges. The government’s first report from September 2025 acknowledged that a significant part of the increase in travel times and inconveniences for public transport users is due to the obsolescence and accumulated wear and tear in some public transport systems. These upcoming works on Lines A, B, and 12, coupled with the ongoing Line 3 renovation, signify a concerted effort by the Mexico City government to address these issues and provide a more efficient and reliable public transportation experience for its citizens.
