Mexico City, January 8, 2026 – In a historic decision, the Mexico City government has officially banned the sale of live animals at the renowned Sonora Market, a commercial hub historically associated with this activity. Mayor Clara Brugada announced the measure, emphasizing a new era for animal welfare in the city and offering substantial economic support to affected vendors.
Historic Ban on Animal Sales at Sonora Market
During a public event, Mayor Clara Brugada declared, “Today is a historic day. It is a day in which we tell Mexico City that there will be no more animal sales in public markets, and the Sonora Market sets the example.” She urged vendors to cease all animal sales, including clandestine or telephone-based transactions, warning that the Attorney General’s Office (FGJ) would act on any reported violations.
The Sonora Market, located in the Merced area, has long been a contentious site due to concerns over animal welfare. This ban marks a significant step towards addressing these issues and promoting more ethical practices within the city’s commercial landscape.
Economic Support and Business Transformation for Vendors
Evelyn Parra, Mayor of Venustiano Carranza, clarified that of the 400 stalls in the Sonora Market, only 84 were dedicated to animal sales. These vendors will now transition to selling other products and services, with the full backing of the Mexico City government. The new approved activities include:
- Pet accessories
- Pet food
- Dog grooming services
- Herbal products
- Esoteric items
To facilitate this transition, Mayor Brugada announced an emergency aid package of 50,000 pesos for each affected vendor. Additionally, those who require further assistance can access low-interest loans ranging from 50,000 to 100,000 pesos. The city authorities are also working on rehoming the animals previously held at the market, focusing on adoption and sterilization initiatives.
Market Rehabilitation and Future Outlook
In addition to the ban and vendor support, Mayor Brugada revealed plans for a major renovation of the Sonora Market. The project will involve an investment of over 10 million pesos, focusing on critical improvements such as:
- Electrical installations
- Roofing
- Interior and exterior corridors
“We will allocate the necessary resources to ensure this market is revitalized and improved,” Brugada affirmed. This comprehensive approach aims to transform the Sonora Market into a modern, humane, and economically viable commercial space.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Mexico City government to enhance animal welfare and support local businesses in adapting to new regulations. The transition is expected to reinforce the city’s commitment to ethical practices and sustainable urban development.
