During ‘La Chilanguera,’ it was announced that the Mexico City Congress has opened registration for public consultation forums. These forums will help shape the new Animal Shelter Law, utilizing an open parliament approach to incorporate all voices. The goal is to create regulations that protect animal welfare and support individuals dedicated to this cause.

Building Consensus for Animal Welfare

Deputy Paulo García (Morena) emphasized that there are no elements to rush or impose anything in this process. He stated, “The objective is to build broad consensus,” and announced that animal activists, shelter owners, and rescuers would be invited to join the dialogue.

Deputy Judith Vanegas (Morena) highlighted the government’s comprehensive approach to animal welfare, noting the genuine interest of President Claudia Sheinbaum and Head of Government Clara Brugada, both of whom have a deep love for animals.

Inclusive Legislative Process

Deputy Manuel Talayero (PVEM) explained that this legislative process will involve listening to, organizing, and jointly developing proposals with rescuers, organizations, and the general public. “Everyone will be given a chance to express their opinions,” he affirmed. Talayero detailed that a microsite is now available for registration for the general forum, which will be followed by four thematic forums held in various locations.

Deputy Diana Barragán (PT) sent a message inviting residents to engage in the debate and acknowledged the Head of Government’s efforts in this area.

Forum Schedule and Participation

A general forum and four thematic forums will take place during February. Specific locations and times are subject to availability. Updates can be found on the Congress website and on the social media channels of the Mexico City Congress.
