Ciudad Juarez Turns White Amid Winter Storm; Alerts Issued for Temperatures as Low as -6°C
Ciudad Juarez, January 26, 2026 – A significant snowfall began on Sunday in Ciudad Juarez, a border city in northern Mexico, covering various sectors with snow and accompanied by rain and a sharp drop in temperature. Authorities have warned that the cold is expected to intensify in the coming days, with temperatures potentially reaching -6°C.
The unusual snowfall, part of a winter storm affecting large areas of the southern United States, led families to venture out into the streets to witness the phenomenon. Meanwhile, Civil Protection authorities issued preventative recommendations in anticipation of the extreme cold.
A Rare and Welcome Phenomenon
Juventino Martínez López, a resident of Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua state, described the event as a positive and uncommon occurrence. “It’s very pleasant; it’s been many years since we saw this. It’s part of the city’s history… it used to snow a lot, even up to a meter high,” he told EFE.
Martínez emphasized that the snowfall encourages reflection on nature but also urged extreme caution at home. “When we use the wood stove, we only do so when we are gathered, and we turn it off when we sleep. We have seen many tragedies due to the improper use of gas,” he warned.
Despite the cold, families seized the moment. Sergio, who went out with his children to see the snow, said the snowfall caught them by surprise. “We quickly got ready with our jackets to go out for a while and take pictures,” he commented.
Alert for Sub-Zero Temperatures
Sergio Rodríguez, Director General of Civil Protection of Ciudad Juarez, reported that the temperature drop was forecast since the beginning of the week and will continue in the coming days. “From Sunday (January 25) night and early Monday (January 26) morning, we will have the most marked decrease, with temperatures around -4 °C and in some parts of the city up to -6 °C,” he explained.
Rodríguez urged the population not to sleep with heaters on, to maintain cross-ventilation in homes, and to constantly check heating systems. “If you detect any fault in gas, wood, or electric heaters, take them to a specialized technician. Accidents can occur with any change in weather,” he stressed.
The official also warned of an increase in fires during the winter season, some resulting in injuries and fatalities. He advised against overloading electrical installations and urged residents to report fires in vacant lots to 911.
Recommendations for Frosty Conditions
Civil Protection recommended protecting exposed pipes, avoiding covering them with moisture-accumulating fabrics, and letting a trickle of water run overnight to prevent freezing. They also called on the public to take care of their health, especially children and the elderly, to avoid abrupt temperature changes, and to stay informed through official channels.
As the snowfall continues, authorities advised caution while driving, to remain attentive to weather warnings, and to enjoy the phenomenon responsibly.
