Mexico City is gearing up for one of the most anticipated traditional celebrations of the year: the Day of the Candelaria 2026. This year, the festivity will transform into a grand popular three-day event featuring free tamales, traditional beverages, and cumbia music.

Three Days of Festivities in Mexico City

According to the capital’s Secretary of Culture, the celebration will take place over three consecutive days: January 30, January 31, and February 1, 2026. The schedule for each day is as follows:

  • Friday, January 30: 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM
  • Saturday, January 31: 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM
  • Sunday, February 1: 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM

The festival will offer a wide variety of artisanal tamales, ranging from classic flavors such as green, red, mole, and sweet, to gourmet and innovative proposals prepared by local cooks and producers. In addition to the gastronomic offerings, traditional beverages like atole, champurrado, and other typical preparations will be available, all made with locally sourced ingredients and artisanal processes.

Cumbia and Community Gathering

Beyond the food, the event will feature a musical program centered around cumbia, a genre deeply rooted in the daily life of the capital. Throughout the three days, there will be live performances by musical groups and ‘sonideros,’ creating a festive atmosphere that invites dancing and intergenerational coexistence. Access to the event will be completely free, ensuring the participation of all sectors of the population.

The Day of the Candelaria, celebrated every February 2, is one of the most important dates on the Mexican calendar, especially for its connection to the tradition of tamales, which year after year brings families and friends together around the table.

Economic and Cultural Impact

Capital authorities highlighted that these types of events also have a positive impact on the local economy by giving visibility to small producers, traditional cooks, and independent gastronomic projects. They also noted that the celebration will be held with a family and cultural focus, with activities designed for all ages.

The organizers’ intention is for the festival to be not only a cultural celebration but also a space for community gathering. More details on the venues, schedules, and musical lineup will be announced in the coming days, so it is recommended to stay tuned to official channels.
