US Returns 11 White-Fronted Parrots Illegally Smuggled from Ciudad Juarez to Mexico
MEXICO CITY, February 11, 2026 – US authorities have handed over 11 white-fronted parrots to the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) that were illegally smuggled from Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua. The agency reported this Wednesday that the alleged perpetrator, a US citizen, who was transporting the specimens in a car, was arrested at the Cordova International Bridge.
The white-fronted parrot is a species under special protection by Semarnat, Mexico’s Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources.
Health Concerns for the Birds
Following a medical evaluation, it was detected that five of the birds are experiencing respiratory and digestive problems. Their final destination will be determined once they have recovered.
The Incident and Arrest
The illegal entry of the parrots into the United States from Ciudad Juarez was intercepted by US authorities. The individual responsible for transporting the birds, a US citizen, was apprehended at the Cordova International Bridge. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges in combating wildlife trafficking across the border.
Profepa’s Role in Wildlife Protection
Profepa, as the federal agency responsible for protecting the environment and natural resources, plays a crucial role in the recovery and rehabilitation of illegally trafficked wildlife. Their intervention ensures that these protected species receive the necessary care and, when possible, are returned to their natural habitats or suitable sanctuaries.
The Plight of the White-Fronted Parrot
The white-fronted parrot (Amazona albifrons) is native to Mexico and Central America and is listed under special protection due to habitat loss and illegal pet trade. The smuggling of these birds not only endangers their individual lives but also poses a threat to the species’ overall population and genetic diversity.
International Cooperation in Combating Trafficking
This case underscores the importance of international cooperation between US and Mexican authorities in combating the illegal trade of protected species. Such collaborative efforts are essential to disrupt trafficking networks and ensure the conservation of biodiversity in both countries.
Further details regarding the investigation and the long-term care of the recovered parrots are expected to be released by Profepa in due course.
