Mexico City, February 13, 2026 – Mexico City has once again garnered international recognition, being named the World Cultural Capital for 2026 by the German travel agency Tourlane. This distinction highlights the city’s exceptional cultural scene, its vast array of museums, and its dedication to making art accessible to all.

CDMX Outshines Global Competitors in Cultural Excellence

The Mexican capital triumphed over prominent cities such as London, Dublin, Berlin, and Edinburgh, securing a title that acknowledges a city’s cultural and museum offerings, as well as its accessibility to art. Tourlane’s report lauded Mexico City, stating, “The city balances extraordinary institutions, world-renowned venues, and a restless contemporary scene like few others in the world.”

Tourlane’s assessment specifically highlighted several iconic cultural landmarks and institutions:

  • The majestic Palacio de Bellas Artes
  • The powerful murals of Diego Rivera
  • The intimate Casa Azul of Frida Kahlo

The agency also made special mention of a selection of the city’s premier museums:

  • Soumaya Museum
  • Tamayo Museum
  • University Museum of Contemporary Art (MUAC)
  • The highly praised Modo (Museum of the Object)

“Uniting it all is the city’s most visited institution, the National Museum of Anthropology,” the report added, emphasizing its central role in the city’s cultural landscape.

A Wealth of Museums and Accessible Art

Mexico City boasts an impressive number of cultural venues, making it a true hub for art and history enthusiasts. According to Tourlane, the city is home to:

  • 44 art museums
  • 110 galleries
  • 19 history museums
  • 14 science museums

The agency further noted the city’s strong presence of iconic art, coupled with accessible prices and regular free admission, making its cultural treasures available to a broad audience.
