Mexico City Announces Five-Day Water Cut in Iztapalapa and Iztacalco Boroughs

Mexico City, February 16 – The Secretariat of Comprehensive Water Management (Segiagua) of Mexico City has announced a significant five-day water supply reduction, commonly referred to as a “mega water cut,” impacting several areas within the Iztapalapa and Iztacalco boroughs. This measure, which commenced on Friday, February 13, is part of scheduled works and maintenance in the eastern zone of the city. While service has already been restored in some affected areas, certain colonies will experience reduced supply until Wednesday, February 18.

Affected Boroughs and Colonies

The two primary boroughs facing the water supply reduction are Iztapalapa and Iztacalco. Segiagua specified the following details:

  • Iztacalco: The affected colonies include Nueva Santa Anita and Viaducto. Residents in these areas are expected to have their water supply fully restored by Wednesday, February 18.
  • Iztapalapa: While specific colony names were not disclosed, the impact is concentrated in the Surponiente, Centro, Nororiente, and Norponiente zones of the borough. Segiagua reported that service in these areas was reinstated as of 5:00 AM on Saturday, February 14.

The announcement was made through Segiagua’s official social media channels, providing residents with crucial information regarding the duration and scope of the interruption.

Recommendations for Residents During Water Cuts

Mexico City frequently experiences water cuts due to maintenance work, repairs to the hydraulic network, or other extraordinary circumstances. To mitigate the impact on daily life, authorities have issued several recommendations for residents:

  • Store Water: Residents are advised to store sufficient water in clean, covered containers for drinking, cooking, and basic hygiene needs.
  • Inspect and Clean Containers: Before filling, tinacos (rooftop water tanks), cisterns, and buckets should be inspected and cleaned, ensuring they have proper lids.
  • Prioritize Essential Use: Water should be prioritized for human consumption and essential needs, conserving supplies as much as possible.
  • Alternative Hygiene: In cases of severe scarcity, using products like hand sanitizer or wet wipes for personal hygiene is recommended.
  • Avoid High-Consumption Activities: Activities such as washing cars, patios, or watering gardens should be avoided during the cut.
  • Prevent Leaks: Keep taps closed to prevent leaks when the water supply is restored.
  • Stay Informed: Residents should pay close attention to official communications regarding the duration of the cut and specific recommendations for their colony or borough.

These proactive measures and responsible water usage are crucial for managing through supply interruptions and safeguarding family health.

Official Statements and Future Outlook

Clara Brugada, Head of Government of Mexico City, has previously addressed issues related to water supply, emphasizing the importance of addressing these challenges. The current mega water cut underscores the ongoing efforts to maintain and improve the city’s vital water infrastructure.

The periodic nature of these cuts highlights the need for continuous public awareness and preparedness among Mexico City’s inhabitants. Segiagua continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as needed.
