Mexico City, February 22 – Authorities in Mexico City, through the Secretariat of Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection (SGIRPC), have activated a Yellow Alert due to a forecast of low temperatures and strong winds. The alert is in effect for Saturday evening, February 21, and the early hours of Sunday, February 22, 2026.

Strong Winds Expected on February 21

The SGIRPC specified that strong winds with gusts potentially reaching 50 to 59 km/h are expected across all 16 boroughs of Mexico City during the afternoon and evening of Saturday, February 21. These conditions were anticipated to occur between 3:00 PM and 9:00 PM on Saturday.

In response, the System of Early Warning of the SGIRPC recommended that the population secure or remove objects that could fall due to the wind, avoid climbing onto rooftops, scaffolding, or cornices, stay away from telephone or electrical poles, and exercise extreme caution when driving due to the possible falling of branches or trees.

Cold Forecast for Early Sunday, February 22

The capital government also activated the Yellow Alert for low temperatures, primarily affecting the mountainous areas of several boroughs. These include:

  • Álvaro Obregón
  • Cuajimalpa
  • Magdalena Contreras
  • Milpa Alta
  • Tlalpan
  • Xochimilco

The SGIRPC indicated that temperatures could range between 4 and 6 degrees Celsius during the hours of 2:00 AM and 8:00 AM on Sunday, February 22.

Given these adverse weather conditions, the capital’s agency recommends that residents wear at least three layers of clothing, preferably made of cotton or wool; use cream to protect and hydrate the skin against the cold; avoid sudden changes in temperature; drink plenty of water; and consume fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins A and C.

Additionally, frequent hand washing or the use of antibacterial gel is advised. In case of any discomfort, individuals should visit the nearest health center. For those using heaters and/or fireplaces, adequate ventilation must be maintained.

For any emergency, residents are urged to contact 911, Locatel at 5658 1111, or the SGIRPC at 555683 2222.

The activation of this alert comes as part of ongoing efforts by Mexico City authorities to ensure public safety and well-being in response to meteorological phenomena.
