Mexico City Achieves Significant Femicide Reduction in 2025

Mexico City, March 7, 2026 – The Head of Government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, announced a significant 35 percent reduction in femicide cases during 2025. This positive development was shared during the “Siempre Vivas” event held on March 7th at the Zócalo capitalino, a day before International Women’s Day.

Brugada highlighted the city’s commitment to justice, stating, “Today, those who dare to act against women should know that this city responds. Today, 95% of those responsible for femicide cases in Mexico City have arrest warrants.” This statement underscores the effectiveness of law enforcement and judicial processes in addressing gender-based violence.

New Initiatives to Combat Gender Violence

In a move to further support victims of gender-based aggression, the Head of Government unveiled the creation of a legal defense office for women. This initiative aims to establish a dedicated group of female lawyers to advocate for and defend victims, ensuring they receive proper legal representation and support.

Brugada also acknowledged the implementation of reforms designed to strengthen efforts against violence targeting women. She extended gratitude to the deputies of the CDMX Congress for approving increased penalties for femicides, cyberbullying, and sexual abuse and harassment, demonstrating a concerted legislative effort to protect women.

Security Programs and Continued Vigilance

Regarding security, the Head of Government emphasized the success of programs such as “Desde la cuna” (From the Cradle), “Mujeres cuidadoras” (Caring Women), and “Mujeres libres y seguras” (Free and Safe Women). She specifically noted the impact of urban infrastructure improvements, stating, “All the lighting works we are doing in this city are directed at all the girls and women of this city,” indicating a strategic approach to enhancing public safety through environmental design.

Furthermore, Brugada confirmed that the 14 actions outlined in the Gender Alert will be maintained across all capital boroughs, reinforcing the city’s ongoing commitment to addressing and preventing gender violence at all levels.

Support for International Women’s Day March

During the conference, Brugada expressed her full support for the women participating in the March 8, 2025, demonstration in CDMX, commemorating International Women’s Day. “To all of them, we say, the city government supports the struggle of women. The Government shares their ideals and works every day for equality. This great Zócalo of Mexico City will receive and embrace them, as it has embraced the struggle of generations of Mexicans for a more just country,” she declared.

At the “Tiempo de Mujeres” event, the city’s leader reflected on the institutionalization of March 8th by the UN, tracing its origins to American women who pioneered the fight for equal rights. She concluded by affirming that Mexico City is consolidating its position as an egalitarian capital, driven by the premise that this is the time for women to transform history and achieve justice.
