Mexico City Announces Construction of Its Own Data Center
Mexico City, March 10 – The government of Mexico City has announced the development of KIO MEX8, a new data center to be powered by KIO Data Centers with an investment of approximately USD$70 million.
The project is part of the capital city’s government strategy to expand access to technological and economic tools in the city, as well as actions by the Secretariat of Economic Development (SEDECO) to attract investment and promote strategic sectors.
According to the agency, the new data center will increase the installed technological capacity in the capital and improve proximity and latency for platforms that support key sectors. Among the most important are e-commerce, fintech, health, education, cybersecurity, and logistics chains.
CDMX Data Center to Strengthen Digital Ecosystem
The data center will host information from national and international companies, with the aim of strengthening the capital’s digital ecosystem and consolidating the city as a competitive environment for investment and technological innovation, the government detailed.
KIO MEX8 seeks to contribute to ensuring the continuity and reliability of digital services that support both economic activity and public services in the capital. Furthermore, the project also incorporates sustainability criteria. Currently, 79% of the energy used by KIO Data Centers comes from renewable sources, with a commitment to increase that percentage as the energy transition progresses.
In terms of water, the centers use closed-circuit cooling systems that allow water to be reused within the same system to regulate the temperature of the infrastructure, reducing consumption compared to traditional methods.
Manola Zabalza, head of SEDECO, highlighted the relevance of this type of investment for the technological development of the capital. From her perspective, the future of Mexico City lies in building infrastructure that allows information to circulate faster and faster.
For his part, Octavio Camarena, CEO of KIO Data Centers, stated that the project seeks to offer infrastructure capable of guaranteeing the continuity and scalability of digital services for companies and public entities.
