Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico – March 20, 2026 – The chapel of the Conciliar Seminary of Ciudad Juárez has become one of the most distinctive architectural works in the religious complex, thanks to its design inspired by a passage from the Old Testament and the singular structure created by architect Óscar Sánchez Cordero. The design features arches over 20 meters high that evoke the skeleton of a whale.
Biblical Inspiration and Symbolic Architecture
Father Javier Álvarez, a member of the seminary, explained that the chapel’s architectural concept is based on the biblical story of Jonah and the Whale, an Old Testament narrative that symbolizes repentance and divine mercy. According to the priest, the arch-shaped columns supporting the structure aim to represent the ribs of the great cetacean, creating the sensation that the faithful are inside the belly of the whale described in the biblical account.
One of the most striking elements of the space is its stained-glass windows, which, along with the arches, appear to be suspended, giving the structure a sense of lightness despite its dimensions. In addition to its aesthetic value, the design also responds to functional criteria, as the stained-glass windows help to reduce the direct incidence of sun from one of the most heat-exposed orientations.
Inside, the architecture reflects the creativity and technical capacity of its designer, characteristics that, according to specialists, correspond to modern architectural trends applied to spiritual spaces. The design also alludes to the biblical story in which God calls the prophet Jonah to preach in the city of Nineveh, known in the narrative for the wickedness of its inhabitants, a mission that the prophet initially tried to avoid. After attempting to flee by sea to Tarshish, Jonah was thrown into the sea during a storm and swallowed by a great fish or whale, where he remained for three days before repenting and finally fulfilling his mission to preach in Nineveh, where the population repented and received divine mercy.
Papal Visit and Aesthetic Impact
The chapel has also received important visitors. During his visit to the city in 2016, Pope Francis came to the seminary and took the opportunity to enter the religious enclosure and offer a prayer, an occasion on which he expressed admiration for the architectural work.
The light passing through the stained-glass windows creates a combination of colors inside the temple, particularly during the early morning hours and at sunset, generating an atmosphere of contemplation and reverence for those who visit this religious space.
