Mexico City, March 28, 2026 – The Mexico City Congress has been actively working over the last six months to foster inter-institutional coordination with various government agencies. This effort aims to tackle critical issues concerning conservation land, environmental sustainability, and the reinforcement of agricultural and forestry activities within the city.
Inter-institutional Coordination and Dialogue with Agrarian Nuclei
According to a report from the Commission for Rural Development, Supply, and Food Distribution, direct dialogue with agrarian nuclei was prioritized. This approach allowed for the identification of needs, challenges, and opportunities that will serve as a foundation for more effective public policies. These policies are being developed under principles of inclusion, equity, social justice, and respect for cultural diversity.
The document reaffirms the strategic focus on rural development as a central pillar for environmental balance, social cohesion, and the preservation of the territorial heritage of Mexico City.
Advances, Actions, and Results Presented
During a regular session of the legislative commission, chaired by Morena deputy Judith Vanegas Tapia, the Semi-Annual Activity Report for the period of September 1, 2025, to February 28, 2026, was presented. The report detailed the progress, actions, and results achieved in fulfilling the commission’s responsibilities.
Focus on Food Supply and Distribution
Regarding food supply and distribution, the report highlighted public markets, street markets (tianguis), and distribution centers as crucial elements for the economic and social stability of Mexico City. The commission conducted working groups with representatives from these sectors and economic authorities to analyze their operations, modernization, and regulation.
These actions aimed to generate proposals to improve logistical efficiency, optimize infrastructure, and ensure more equitable conditions for accessing quality food.
Strengthening Linkages and Supporting Producers
The report also indicated that schemes promoting stronger connections between rural production and urban commercialization circuits were encouraged. This initiative seeks to reduce intermediaries, directly benefiting producers.
During the reporting period, the Commission for Rural Development, Supply, and Food Distribution held two formal sessions and various activities outlined in its Annual Program and Work Plan. These included meetings with producer associations, merchants, and social organizations.
The report was approved by Deputy Vanegas Tapia, along with deputies Miriam Saldaña Cháirez (PT), Daniela Gicela Álvarez Camacho (PAN), Luisa Fernanda Ledesma Alpízar (MC), and legislators Manuel Talayero Pariente (PVEM) and Andrés Sánchez Miranda (PAN).
