Mexico City, March 31, 2026 – Residents of Mexico City are advised to prepare for significant weather changes as authorities predict heavy rains, potential hailstorms, and a notable drop in temperatures for Tuesday evening. The Secretariat of Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection (SGIRPC) has issued a Yellow Alert for 13 of the city’s boroughs, urging the public to take necessary precautions.

Yellow Alert for 13 Boroughs Due to Heavy Rains and Hail

The SGIRPC has activated a Yellow Alert across a significant portion of Mexico City, indicating a moderate risk level due to anticipated intense precipitation and the possibility of hail. The affected boroughs include:

  • Álvaro Obregón
  • Benito Juárez
  • Coyoacán
  • Cuauhtémoc
  • Iztacalco
  • Iztapalapa
  • Magdalena Contreras
  • Miguel Hidalgo
  • Milpa Alta
  • Tláhuac
  • Tlalpan
  • Venustiano Carranza
  • Xochimilco

Authorities recommend that residents in these areas, and across the city, adjust their travel plans and allow for extra time due to potentially hazardous road conditions.

Electrical Storms and Strong Winds Also Expected

Beyond heavy rainfall and hail, several boroughs are also expected to experience electrical storms, accompanied by wind gusts of up to 30 kilometers per hour. The areas where electrical activity is most likely are:

  • Álvaro Obregón
  • Benito Juárez
  • Coyoacán
  • Gustavo A. Madero
  • Iztacalco
  • Tlalpan
  • Venustiano Carranza

These conditions could lead to downed branches, power outages, and other related hazards.

Civil Protection Recommendations for Residents

In light of the adverse weather forecast, Civil Protection authorities have issued a series of recommendations to ensure public safety:

  • Dress Appropriately: Wear warm and waterproof clothing, and carry an umbrella.
  • Footwear: Opt for boots to navigate potentially flooded streets.
  • Outdoor Hazards: Avoid standing near walls, billboards, trees, and electrical cables, as these could pose a risk during strong winds and electrical storms.
  • Waste Management: Refrain from littering in streets and storm drains to prevent blockages and reduce the risk of flooding.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Have a portable lamp and radio ready for any potential power outages. Keep essential personal documents in a waterproof ‘life backpack’ in case of an emergency.

The SGIRPC and local media outlets, including La Prensa, are urging citizens to stay informed about the evolving weather conditions through official channels and digital platforms.

As of Tuesday afternoon, March 31, light rains and showers have already been reported in several boroughs, including Azcapotzalco, Benito Juárez, Cuauhtémoc, and Miguel Hidalgo. Dark clouds loom over the capital and parts of the Valley of Mexico, indicating that more significant precipitation is imminent. Temperatures have also begun to drop, prompting many to seek warmer attire.

This weather event underscores the importance of preparedness and vigilance during periods of inclement weather in Mexico City.
