Alleged Extortionist Arrested in Connection with Arson and Attack on Ciudad Juárez Business
Ciudad Juárez, April 9, 2026 – Authorities in Ciudad Juárez have arrested an alleged extortionist, identified as Edwin R. and/or Michael G., 38, in connection with a violent attack and arson at a local business. The arrest was made by elements of the State Investigation Agency (AEI) following an investigation by the Unit to Combat Extortion of the Northern Zone District Attorney’s Office.
According to the investigation file, the judicial order was granted by a Control Judge of the Bravos Judicial District after the Public Ministry gathered evidence linking the accused to events that occurred on April 4.
Extortion Scheme and Violent Attack
The investigations indicate that the detained individual, along with at least three other people, allegedly participated in a telephone extortion scheme targeting a local merchant. They reportedly demanded weekly payments of 60,000 pesos through threats and intimidation, creating an atmosphere of fear to force the victim to comply with their demands.
When the merchant refused to pay, the aggressors went to a business located in the Zacatecas and/or Arroyo Colorado neighborhood. Inside the establishment were five people, including two minors, who were physically and morally intimidated.
During the attack, one of the perpetrators allegedly doused the establishment with gasoline and then set it on fire after stealing the money from the cash register. This incident resulted in four people being injured, including the two minors.
Ongoing Investigation and Legal Proceedings
The arrested individual, Edwin R. and/or Michael G., will be presented before the judicial authority in the coming hours for an initial hearing. Authorities continue their search for another alleged accomplice, who remains hospitalized in serious condition. In accordance with the law, the accused is presumed innocent until his responsibility is determined by a sentence.
