Mexico City Congress Advocates for Enhanced Mental Health Support for Pregnant Women

Mexico City, April 18, 2026 – The Mexico City Congress has urged the Secretariats of Social Welfare and Equality and Public Health to bolster mental health initiatives within the “Healthy Women, Protected Children” program, in coordination with the 16 capital municipalities. This directive follows the approval of a Point of Agreement presented by Deputy Adriana Espinosa de los Monteros.

The proposal aims to reinforce preventive and priority care for pregnant women, contributing to their overall well-being. Deputy Espinosa de los Monteros emphasized the critical importance of early detection for mothers at psychological risk, stating, “When we talk about the early detection of mothers at risk, we are fundamentally talking about the future of our society. Because when we protect a woman during pregnancy, we not only care for one life, we protect at least two and often her entire family environment.”

Addressing Unseen Challenges: Stress, Anxiety, and Depression in Pregnancy

Espinosa de los Monteros highlighted that many women in Mexico City experience pregnancy under conditions of stress, anxiety, depression, and even violence. She pointed out that these factors often go unnoticed and undiagnosed, leading to a lack of timely intervention despite their profound negative effects.

“The evidence is clear: the emotional well-being of the mother directly impacts the development of the infant. A pregnancy accompanied by fear, loneliness, or instability can translate into difficulties in attachment, emotional development, and the future health of girls and boys. That is why early prevention should not be limited to clinical aspects,” she asserted during a plenary session.

During a session last Tuesday, the MORENA legislator underscored persistent challenges in Mexico City, including pregnancies without timely prenatal care, conditions of social vulnerability, violence, poverty, and obstacles to accessing health services. She explained that early detection not only identifies medical complications but also social and emotional factors that can endanger both mother and child.

“Detecting in time is saving lives; it is avoiding complications; it is guaranteeing safe births and in more dignified environments. Talking about ‘Healthy Women, Protected Children’ is not just a slogan, but a route of action, as it implies strengthening primary health care,” the representative stressed.

A Shift Towards Preventive Care and Community Support

Espinosa de los Monteros noted that this initiative also involves bringing health services closer to communities, providing training for medical personnel, and crucially, building community support networks to identify and accompany women from the early stages of pregnancy.

In this context, she urged capital authorities and municipalities to transition from a reactive to a preventive model, where gestation is monitored from the outset and risk signals are not ignored, ensuring that babies are born in safe conditions.

“When a mother is at risk, all of society is at risk, and when we protect a mother, we are building a better future for everyone. Let’s make early detection a priority, not an exception. Let’s make prevention a permanent public policy,” she concluded.

The Mexico City Congress continues to focus on legislative actions that promote the well-being of its citizens, with particular attention to vulnerable populations.
