A heatwave is set to dominate the weather across a significant portion of Mexico this weekend. According to the National Meteorological Service (SMN), an anticyclonic circulation will maintain hot to extremely hot conditions with a low probability of rain in vast areas of the national territory, a situation that could extend into next week.
Mexico City: Up to 32 Degrees and High UV Radiation
In Mexico City, capital authorities issued a special notice for high temperatures, warning that an intense heat period will begin this Saturday, April 25, and is expected to last until Thursday, April 30. The Secretariat of Integral Risk Management and Civil Protection reported that maximum temperatures between 29 and 32 degrees Celsius are expected for several consecutive days.
In addition to the heat, the forecast for Mexico City includes:
- Partially cloudy skies
- High ultraviolet radiation index
- Strong wind gusts with possible dust storms in the afternoon
For Saturday and Sunday, the SMN also forecasts temperatures of 30 to 35 degrees in Mexico City, as well as the possibility of isolated showers towards Sunday.
Over 15 States Affected by the Heat This Weekend
The most extreme temperatures, between 40 and 45 degrees Celsius, are expected in states such as:
- Durango
- Sinaloa
- Jalisco
- Michoacán
- Guerrero
- Morelos
- Tamaulipas
- San Luis Potosí
- Guanajuato
- Querétaro
- Hidalgo
- Veracruz
- Oaxaca
- Campeche
- Yucatán
- Quintana Roo
By Sunday, the list expands to include areas of Coahuila, Nuevo León, Puebla, Chiapas, and Tabasco.
Will There Be Rain?
Although heat will prevail, not the entire country will be dry. The forecast indicates scattered showers and rain in central, eastern, and southeastern states. The entities with the highest probability of precipitation this weekend are:
- Oaxaca
- Puebla
- Tlaxcala
- State of Mexico
- Hidalgo
- Chiapas
- Guerrero
- Veracruz
In some regions, the rains could be accompanied by electrical discharges and hail.
Recommendations for Intense Heat
Given the high temperatures, Mexico City’s Civil Protection recommended:
- Avoiding prolonged sun exposure
- Staying in cool and ventilated places
- Using sunscreen
- Drinking plenty of fluids
- Wearing light and light-colored clothing
- Paying special attention to children, the elderly, and pets
The SMN forecast indicates that the heatwave will continue for at least the next few days, meaning April will close with very hot weather in several regions of the country.
