Mexico City, April 26, 2026 – Mexico City’s government has intensified its efforts to ensure the safety and legality of lodging establishments within the capital. Over two consecutive weekends, from April 16-18 and April 23-25, the Secretariat of Government of Mexico City (SECGOB), in collaboration with the Institute of Administrative Verification (INVEA) and the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC), carried out comprehensive ‘Lodging Review’ operations.
Operations Target Key Areas in Cuauhtémoc and Iztacalco
These joint inspections focused on specific areas known for a high concentration of lodging facilities. In the Cuauhtémoc borough, operations were conducted in the Tabacalera, Doctores, and Obrera neighborhoods. Additionally, the Santa Anita neighborhood in the Iztacalco borough was also part of the verification process.
The primary objective of these operations was to verify that hotels possess the necessary operating permits and provide adequate services to both residents and visitors to the capital. The authorities aimed to detect any administrative non-compliance and ensure that users receive safe and legally compliant services.
Three Hotels Suspended, Four More Verified
As a direct result of these intensified inspections, three establishments were suspended due to various irregularities. Furthermore, four other lodging facilities underwent thorough verification processes. The nature of the irregularities leading to the suspensions included administrative non-compliance and potential safety concerns, though specific details for each suspended hotel were not immediately released.
Commitment to User Protection and Legal Compliance
SECGOB emphasized that these verification actions are part of an ongoing commitment by the current administration to maintain permanent oversight. The goal is to prioritize the protection of users and respect their rights by ensuring that all lodging establishments adhere to current regulations. This proactive approach aims to prevent irregularities that could compromise safety, legal certainty, and the quality of hospitality services in Mexico City.
The operations were designed to ensure that hotels offer safe conditions and guarantee a dignified service for all guests. This initiative underscores the capital’s dedication to upholding high standards within its tourism sector, especially as the city prepares for future international events.
Broader Context: Security and Tourism in Mexico City
These actions align with broader efforts by Mexico City to enhance its reputation as a secure and attractive tourist destination. The city’s Secretary of Tourism has previously stated that Mexico City aims to be a top global host, indicating a focus on improving various aspects of the visitor experience, including safety and regulatory compliance in accommodation.
The increased scrutiny on hotels also comes amid discussions about the expansion of vacation rentals and their impact on the city’s lodging landscape. While the current operations focused on traditional hotels, the broader context suggests a growing emphasis on regulating all forms of accommodation to ensure fair competition and consumer protection.
Authorities have urged all lodging establishments to review their operational compliance to avoid penalties and ensure they meet the legal and safety standards set by the city. These verification efforts are expected to continue indefinitely, reinforcing Mexico City’s commitment to a safe and regulated tourism environment.
