Mexico City, April 29 (EFE) – Authorities in Mexico City confirmed on Wednesday the arrest of four alleged perpetrators in the murder of four members of the same family in the capital’s northern area. The case is being investigated for possible links to extortion networks.
Family Murder in Azcapotzalco Leads to Four Arrests
The crime occurred on Tuesday inside a home in the Azcapotzalco borough, where four people – believed to be members of the same family – were shot to death, according to initial reports. Pablo Vázquez Camacho, Secretary of Citizen Security for Mexico City, announced the arrest of three men and one woman allegedly involved in the crime.
Joint Operation Leads to Suspects’ Location
The suspects were located in the State of Mexico, in the vicinity of the capital, as a result of a joint operation with authorities from that state, the official detailed. He explained that, based on video surveillance camera analysis, two stolen vans believed to have been used after the crime were identified.
Identities of the Arrested and Confrontation with Police
The detainees were identified as María de Jesús ‘N’, José María ‘N’, Francisco Javier ‘N’, and Emiliano ‘N’. The latter, he added, allegedly fired at agents during his arrest, prompting police to repel the aggression and wound him. The detainees were placed at the disposal of the State of Mexico Prosecutor’s Office, along with the vehicles, two firearms, and various objects possibly stolen from the property.
Extortion as a Possible Motive Amid Rising Cases
Although authorities have not confirmed the motive for the crime, preliminary lines of investigation point to a possible extortion scheme, a recurring practice in attacks on homes in the capital, in which criminal groups exert pressure or retaliation against victims. This case occurs in a context of a sustained rise in extortion in Mexico City. Between January and April 2025, the crime increased by 173% year-on-year, according to the NGO México Evalúa.
National and Local Extortion Trends
Nationally, 10,804 victims were registered in 2024, and an average of almost 30 daily cases in January 2025, according to official figures. Mexico City accounts for 66% of these crimes and has been the scene of recent operations against criminal groups such as Tren de Aragua, Unión Tepito, and Los Rodolfos, all implicated in extortion practices.
