Chihuahua Prosecutor’s Office Uncovers Two Bodies in Clandestine Graves in Ciudad Juarez
Ciudad Juarez, April 30 – The Chihuahua State Prosecutor’s Office (FGE) yesterday announced the discovery of two bodies buried in clandestine graves within a residence in the Urbivilla del Cedro Etapa II neighborhood of Ciudad Juarez. The operation stems from an ongoing investigation in the Northern Zone by the Unit for Missing and/or Unlocated Persons.
Ministerial agents executed a search warrant at the property located at Sierra de Alcaraz number 2158 on Tuesday afternoon. The warrant was granted by a judge from the Accusatory Penal System of the Bravos Judicial District.
Operation to Locate Evidence and Remains
The primary objective of the search was to locate bodies, evidence, biological material, or any other useful indicators pertinent to the Northern Zone investigation file. The judicial mandate was led by agents from the Public Ministry, elements of the State Investigation Agency, and forensic experts.
The operation also saw the participation of elements from the National Guard (GN) and the Mexican Army, who provided support with the K-9 Unit for the detection of human remains.
Discovery of Two Clandestine Graves
According to initial reports, the ministerial intervention commenced around 5:45 PM and concluded at 8:22 PM. During this period, teams conducted soundings with metal rods in the backyard of the property.
The search efforts revealed the existence of two clandestine graves. Forensic experts determined that one of the graves measured approximately 2.4 meters in length, 90 centimeters in width, and 1.27 meters in depth. Inside this first grave, a cadaver wrapped in a blanket was found; its sex could not be immediately determined.
The second grave was reported to be 1.98 meters long, 98 centimeters wide, and 84 centimeters deep. This subterranean space also contained a cadaver of undetermined sex, similarly wrapped in a blanket. Both bodies were meticulously extracted under forensic supervision and strict protocols, to facilitate further investigation into the case.
Post-Mortem Analysis and Identification Efforts
Authorities detailed that the human remains have been transported to the Forensic Medical Service. There, studies will be conducted to determine the time and cause of death, as well as the potential identification of the victims following their discovery.
In this context, state and federal authorities are maintaining surveillance deployments and operations across various sectors of Chihuahua. This intensified effort comes amidst persistent violent incidents linked to territorial disputes among criminal cells with a historical presence in the region.
Cartel Dominance in Chihuahua
The presence of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) is considered ‘dominant’ in the state of Chihuahua, according to United States authorities. This assertion appeared in an official report highlighting the cartel’s territorial control and influence in the northern region of the country, as reported by La Verdad Juarez.
Furthermore, the DEA’s 2025 National Drug Threat Assessment categorized Chihuahua among the 22 states with a significant CJNG presence, representing the highest intensity level. The report identified the CJNG as one of Mexico’s most powerful and violent criminal organizations and a key supplier of illicit fentanyl to the United States, with operations spanning over 40 countries.
Chihuahua’s direct border with Texas and New Mexico facilitates the cross-border movement of drugs and migrants into the U.S.
Alliances and Increased Violence
In 2024, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctioned five key members of La Línea, confirming their alliance since 2017 and their role in drug trafficking to the north. Local media have documented that this collaboration between the CJNG and La Línea has led to a surge in violence since 2021, as they contest control of northern Chihuahua with the Sinaloa Cartel.
Following the reported death of Oseguera Cervantes, alias ‘El Mencho’, the Government of Chihuahua has maintained the Security Table in permanent session due to the risk of clashes and attacks related to the realignment of criminal forces within the entity.
