Mexico City, May 1 – The VIII European Union-Mexico Summit is set to take place on May 22 in Mexico City, following an agreement between Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and European Council President António Costa. The summit is anticipated to be a pivotal moment for bilateral relations, marking a new phase in the strategic partnership between Mexico and the European Union.
A Shared Vision for Global Cooperation
During a telephone conversation, both leaders acknowledged a shared global vision rooted in cooperation, sustainable growth, and respect for international law. President Costa emphasized the mutual commitment to these principles, which will guide the discussions during the summit.
Costa expressed his anticipation for the visit, stating in a social media message, “I am looking forward to visiting Mexico to continue advancing our joint priorities: trade, investment, climate and environment, energy, gender equality, health, and research.”
Key Representatives and Agenda
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) confirmed that the European Union delegation will be led by President Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Their work agenda in Mexico will commence on May 21, leading up to the main summit.
A primary outcome expected from the summit is the signing of the “Strategic Association Agreement on Political, Economic and Cooperation Matters between Mexico and the European Union” (Modernized Global Agreement), along with an Interim Commercial Agreement. These agreements are pending the completion of internal procedures within the European bloc.
Modernizing the Bilateral Framework
The Modernized Global Agreement is designed to update and deepen the existing political, economic, and cooperation framework, which was established 25 years ago with the entry into force of the Mexico-European Union Global Agreement in 2000. This update reflects the evolving global landscape and the strengthened ties between the two entities.
Furthermore, the summit will facilitate progress on a range of shared priorities, including environmental protection, investment opportunities, energy collaboration, security initiatives, public health, migration policies, digitalization efforts, and innovation.
The discussions are expected to cover a comprehensive array of topics aimed at fostering mutual growth and addressing global challenges collaboratively. The focus on sustainable development and international cooperation underscores the commitment of both Mexico and the EU to a progressive and responsible global agenda.
The summit represents a significant step towards reinforcing the long-standing relationship between Mexico and the European Union, paving the way for enhanced collaboration across various sectors.
