Ciudad Juárez Intensifies Fight Against Rickettsiosis as Endemic Disease Claims 11 Lives

Ciudad Juárez, May 4, 2026 – The municipal government of Ciudad Juárez is significantly stepping up its efforts to combat rickettsiosis, a disease now considered endemic in the city. This decision comes after the alarming revelation of 21 confirmed cases and 11 fatalities, highlighting the urgent need for reinforced public health measures.

Daphne Patricia Santana Fernández, the Municipal Health Director, made the announcement during a press conference held alongside other municipal officials. She stated that under the direct instruction of Mayor Cruz Pérez Cuéllar, the information and prevention campaign will be substantially strengthened this year. The objective is to broaden its reach among citizens and enhance coordinated efforts with both governmental and non-governmental health institutions.

Understanding the Threat: Transmission and Symptoms

Santana Fernández elaborated on the nature of rickettsiosis, explaining that it is caused by a bacterium primarily transmitted through ticks, though it can also be spread by lice. This clarifies the critical importance of hygiene and environmental control in preventing its spread.

Key preventive measures highlighted by the director include maintaining cleanliness in homes, avoiding the accumulation of objects that can harbor pests, reinforcing personal hygiene, and seeking immediate medical attention at a health unit upon experiencing any symptoms. This proactive approach is crucial given the disease’s rapid progression.

She warned that the initial symptoms of rickettsiosis can easily be mistaken for other common ailments, typically beginning with fever, general malaise, and a sore throat. However, these symptoms can quickly escalate to severe complications, including the appearance of skin rashes and the necessity for hospitalization. Early detection and treatment are therefore paramount to improving patient outcomes.

Alarming Statistics: High Lethality Rate

The severity of the situation is underscored by the current statistics: Ciudad Juárez has recorded 21 confirmed cases and 11 deaths, resulting in a lethality rate of approximately 51 percent. This figure is considered exceptionally high by health authorities and underscores the urgent need for effective intervention strategies.

In response to this grim reality, Santana Fernández indicated that a primary focus will be on reducing this high lethality index. This will be achieved through continuous training for medical personnel and ensuring timely and appropriate care for patients. Enhanced medical preparedness is expected to significantly impact the survival rate of those affected.

Community Engagement and Diagnostic Challenges

A positive development in the fight against rickettsiosis has been the increased community participation in field operations. More families are now granting access to brigades for informational activities, inspections, clean-up efforts (descacharrización), and fumigation. Santana Fernández hailed this as a significant advancement in the municipal strategy, indicating a growing public awareness and willingness to cooperate.

Despite these gains, a significant challenge remains in the management of diagnostic tests. Ciudad Juárez currently lacks a state public health laboratory, which necessitates sending samples to the state of Chihuahua for analysis. This process can lead to delays in obtaining results, hindering rapid diagnosis and treatment. Authorities are actively working to streamline this process and reduce response times.

Ongoing Commitment to Public Health

Municipal authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining permanent prevention efforts, which will be further intensified in the coming days. This forms part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at protecting the health and well-being of the residents of Ciudad Juárez. The sustained nature of these efforts is critical to controlling the spread of this endemic disease and mitigating its impact on the community.

The concerted actions by the municipal government, coupled with increased public awareness and participation, are vital steps in addressing the serious public health challenge posed by rickettsiosis in Ciudad Juárez.
