Guelaguetza Festival Eyes Ciudad Juárez: A Boost for Tourism and Culture
Ciudad Juárez, June 5 – Organizers of Oaxaca’s traditional Guelaguetza festival are exploring the possibility of hosting the event in Ciudad Juárez. This initiative aims to attract visitors, strengthen the city’s tourism offerings, and create new avenues for cultural promotion. The proposal was presented to the City Council’s Tourism and Economic Development Commission, outlining the significant cultural and economic benefits the celebration could bring to this border city.
Claudia Maldonado Garduño, Director General of Economic Development, Tourism, and Agribusiness, confirmed that the request was directly submitted to Mayor Cruz Pérez Cuéllar and her department. Promoters believe that Ciudad Juárez possesses favorable conditions to host the event, citing its strategic location and the constant flow of national and international visitors to the region.
“The event organizer recognizes Juárez’s advantages as a border city and the large number of visitors we can attract through such activities,” Maldonado Garduño stated.
Proposed Venues and Cross-Border Appeal
According to the initial proposal, the Guelaguetza could take place at venues such as the Josué Neri Santos Municipal Gymnasium and the Gran Plaza Juan Gabriel. These locations would host artistic performances, cultural exhibitions, gastronomic showcases, and other activities representative of Oaxaca’s diverse regions. The goal is to leverage Ciudad Juárez’s border location to attract local audiences, visitors from other parts of Mexico, and residents of the United States interested in experiencing one of Mexico’s most important cultural expressions.
Beyond promoting Oaxacan culture, the project envisions the participation of indigenous communities and native groups residing in Ciudad Juárez, further enriching the city’s characteristic cultural diversity.
Logistical Support, Not Financial Aid
The organizers have clarified that they are not seeking financial resources from the Municipality. Instead, they are requesting institutional support, assistance with securing public spaces, and guidance in managing permits and other logistical aspects essential for the event’s realization.
The Guelaguetza, considered Oaxaca’s premier cultural festival, is one of Mexico’s most significant folkloric manifestations. Its name, derived from the Zapotec language, signifies the act of sharing and cooperation among communities. The celebration features delegations from various Oaxacan regions, showcasing traditional dances, music, typical attire, handicrafts, and a wide array of culinary delights that annually attract thousands of visitors.
Economic Impact and Future Steps
Members of the commission believe that hosting the event could become a major tourist attraction for Ciudad Juárez, generating significant economic benefits for sectors such as hotels, restaurants, transportation, and local commerce. The proposal remains under review as municipal authorities and organizers assess operational and logistical details to determine the feasibility of bringing the Guelaguetza to this border city for the first time.
