Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, June 5, 2026 – The Institute of Security and Social Services for State Workers (ISSSTE), led by Martí Batres Guadarrama, achieved a significant medical milestone yesterday, June 5, 2026, by successfully carrying out its first laser prostate surgery campaign at the General Hospital “Ciudad Juárez” in Chihuahua.
Five Patients Benefited from Innovative Procedure
This pioneering campaign provided specialized medical attention to five beneficiaries, aged between 64 and 72 years, who were diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia and severe urinary obstruction. These conditions severely impacted their quality of life, with some patients being permanently dependent on urinary catheters.
Patients selected for the procedure had not responded to conventional pharmacological treatments, necessitating a specialized intervention to restore their well-being and autonomy. Following the surgeries, all patients showed favorable recovery and were discharged without complications.
High-Specialty Care Now Accessible Locally
Urologist Noé Esaúl Martínez Juárez, affiliated with the “1° de Octubre” Regional Hospital and lead surgeon for these interventions, emphasized the profound importance of this achievement for public healthcare.
“This is an achievement that marks a before and after in access to high-specialty procedures in a General Hospital,” Martínez Juárez stated. He further explained that the laser surgery effectively eliminated urinary obstruction, significantly enhancing the patients’ quality of life.
“A permanent catheter means repeated infections, pain, total dependence, and a non-existent social life. The fact that their General Hospital resolved this problem for them without having to travel or pay for a private laser procedure is an act of healthcare justice,” he highlighted.
Reducing Costs and Waiting Times
The campaign represents a crucial step in bringing high-specialty procedures closer to beneficiaries, eliminating the need for transfers to third-level hospitals or reliance on private services. This approach effectively reduces costs, waiting times, and potential complications for both patients and their families.
Each surgical intervention lasted approximately 60 to 90 minutes and utilized advanced specialized technology. This included a high-power Holmium (Ho) laser, laser resection equipment, a prostatic tissue morcellator, and sophisticated video surgery systems.
The multidisciplinary team involved in the procedures comprised urologists from the General Hospital “Ciudad Juárez,” alongside anesthesiologists and surgical nurses, ensuring comprehensive and expert care.
Part of a National Strategy to Strengthen Healthcare
ISSSTE authorities underscored that this campaign is integral to a national strategy aimed at strengthening the resolution capacity of the institute’s hospitals and extending high-specialty medical services to various regions across the country.
Through this initiative, the General Hospital “Ciudad Juárez” reinforces its commitment to expanding access to innovative and specialized treatments. This effort significantly bolsters medical care for beneficiaries in northern Mexico and contributes to the ongoing modernization of health services championed by ISSSTE.
