Mexico City, June 6 – With the 2026 World Cup rapidly approaching, the Magdalena Contreras borough in Mexico City has announced a special initiative, “Vive el Mundial en Contreras” (Live the World Cup in Contreras), to distribute thousands of free promotional items to residents. This effort aims to engage the community in the excitement of the global football tournament.

Magdalena Contreras Gears Up for World Cup with Free Giveaways

The announcement, published in the Official Gazette of Mexico City, details the distribution of 23,500 items, including balls, jerseys, thermoses, and keychains. These will be given to attendees participating in the various activities organized by the borough in celebration of the World Cup.

How to Claim Your World Cup Souvenirs

Obtaining these promotional items is straightforward: residents simply need to attend any of the events hosted by the Magdalena Contreras borough during the World Cup. According to the operational rules, there are no specific eligibility criteria for receiving the gifts; items will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.

The initiative aims for a broad distribution, with 60% of the items allocated to girls and women, and the remaining 40% to boys and men. This gender-conscious approach seeks to ensure wider participation across the community.

Breakdown of Promotional Items:

  • 8,500 keychains
  • 6,000 jerseys
  • 5,000 thermoses
  • 4,000 balls

Fan Fest and Thematic Exhibitions Planned

In addition to the giveaways, Mayor Fernando Mercado announced the establishment of a Fan Fest at the Unidad Independencia. This venue will serve as a central hub for fans to watch Mexican National Team matches and enjoy a vibrant football atmosphere. The borough is also preparing a thematic exhibition showcasing the history of the World Cup, including references to Pelé’s legendary performance in Mexico during the 1970 World Cup.

Mayor Mercado teased further details on social media, stating, “We will soon share everything we are preparing.” These local celebrations will complement other festivities across the capital, which anticipates a significant influx of national and international tourists in the coming weeks.

Zócalo to Host Official FIFA Fan Fest

Mexico City’s iconic Zócalo will also host an official FIFA Fan Fest. Thousands of attendees will have access to live match broadcasts, recreational activities, and immersive experiences related to the tournament. FIFA has confirmed that, for organizational and security reasons, no alcoholic beverages will be sold at the Fan Fests in Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey.

Mexico’s World Cup 2026 Group Stage Schedule

The Mexican National Team has three group stage matches scheduled:

  • Mexico vs. South Africa: June 11, 13:00 hrs
  • South Korea vs. Mexico: June 18, 19:00 hrs
  • Mexico vs. Czechia: June 24, 19:00 hrs

The team’s progression to the knockout stages will depend on their performance in these matches.

As the World Cup draws nearer, Mexico City is transforming to welcome thousands of fans, turning every corner of the capital into a vibrant football celebration.
