Mexico City has officially broken a Guinness World Record with the unveiling of the world’s largest historical football mural, entirely painted by hand. This monumental artwork, spanning over 200 square meters, was created by a team of Mexican artists over 90 days, just ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
A Historical Journey Through Football
The mural offers a creative narrative journey, beginning with pre-Hispanic ball games, through the emergence of modern football in the United Kingdom in 1863, and its subsequent arrival and evolution in Mexico. It specifically highlights the state of Hidalgo as the cradle of Mexican football. The artistic piece also pays special tribute to Mexico’s rich cultural heritage intertwined with the passion for football.
Carlos Alberto Badillo Cruz, the artistic creator and director of the project, explained the meticulous process: “We used brushes and different types of paintbrushes to achieve great precision and detail.” This complex technique required significant skill and patience, presenting a personal challenge that involved extensive research to synthesize the tradition of football in Mexico into compelling imagery.
Representing Global and Local Football History
“The aim was to capture the global history of this sport on this impressive canvas, including its connection with the Mesoamerican ball game, which we know is part of our national history and identity,” said Badillo Cruz. The mural showcases the evolution of football through history, depicting various iconic characters, different styles of attire, and numerous representative elements of national architecture, as well as famous stadiums and landmarks from around the world.
Notable Mexican landmarks featured in the mural include Mexico City’s Basílica de Guadalupe, the Palacio de Bellas Artes, the Estadio Azteca, and the Ángel de la Independencia, alongside stadiums in Monterrey and Guadalajara.
Revitalizing Public Spaces and Fostering Community
The creation of this mural aims to breathe new life into a previously neglected space in the Gustavo A. Madero borough, transforming it into a medium of expression that unites the community, fosters hope, and strengthens identity. Another objective of the project was to bring Mexican culture and art to various public spaces, sharing traditions, reviving the sensibility of the Mexican people, and promoting national identity.
The artists expressed their pride, stating, “This painting is also a great source of pride because it comes from our pre-Hispanic roots and spans generations.” They further explained, “It shows how it started with the ball game and evolved to Pachuca, then gained more momentum.”
The Artists and Location
The record-breaking mural is located on the Sendero Centenario in the Gustavo A. Madero borough and was officially unveiled on Sunday, May 24. The artists involved in this magnificent project are André Orozco, Vivian Velázquez, Francisco Tomás, José Cruz Pacheco, Carlos Alberto Vadillo Cruz, and Cristian Zúñiga.
The composition also includes flags of some of the nations that will be represented by their footballers in the upcoming World Cup, as well as the faces of players from different eras.
