Senate Warns of Alarming Housing Dispossession Crisis in Mexico City

Mexico City, June 24, 2026 – An analysis conducted by the Mexican Senate reveals that the increasing number of dispossession complaints, particularly in Mexico City, poses a significant threat to the assets of thousands of families. The study highlights the authorities’ inability to curb this crime, allowing the problem to spread unchecked across various regions of the country.

The report underscores that a growing number of citizens are being dispossessed of their homes, land, and other real estate properties, with institutions responsible for safeguarding family assets failing to implement effective responses to protect their rights and properties.

Institutional Inaction Fuels Crisis

The PRI parliamentary group’s report, which will present an exhortation to the Government of Mexico City, warns that this phenomenon has reached alarming proportions, with figures reflecting a severe crisis in the administration of justice. “In Mexico City alone, more than 25,000 dispossession complaints accumulated between 2020 and April 2026, while only 463 arrests related to this crime were reported. The data reveals an alarming reality: impunity exceeds 98 percent of reported cases,” stated Manuel Añorve, PRI coordinator.

Añorve cited the emblematic case of República de Cuba 11 and 12 in the Historic Center of Mexico City, where almost a year after the eviction of over 70 people, affected families continue to demand justice and a definitive solution. This conflict has become a symbol of a recurring problem across the capital: complaints, endless legal processes, and victims awaiting institutional responses for months or even years.

Beyond the impact on those who lost their homes, the case has caused economic and social repercussions in one of the city’s most vital areas. Affected businesses, decreased economic activity, urban decay, and a growing perception of insecurity are among the consequences of an unresolved conflict.

A Structural Phenomenon

For legislators, these figures demonstrate that the problem is no longer a series of isolated cases but has become a structural phenomenon affecting thousands of citizens. The loss of family assets, invasion of properties, prolonged litigation, and lack of judicial results have generated a growing perception of helplessness among those who turn to authorities for protection.

The Senate’s findings emphasize the urgent need for comprehensive strategies and effective institutional responses to address this escalating crisis of housing dispossession, which continues to erode public trust and destabilize communities within Mexico City and beyond.
