The Universidad Tecnológica Paso del Norte (UTPN) has actively participated in the Third ‘Niñas STEM’ (Girls in STEM) National Meeting. This national initiative, replicated across technological universities in Mexico, aims to ignite an early interest in science and education, inspiring future generations of professionals.

UTPN Rector Highlights Program’s Impact

Francisco Llera Pacheco, Rector of UTPN, reported that over 50 female students from Felipe Ángeles Elementary School and Susana Wesley School, both located within the university’s area of influence, participated in this event. Students and faculty from UTPN meticulously prepared various activities specifically designed to pique the interest of young girls in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields.

Breaking Stereotypes and Encouraging Female Participation

The primary objective of the meeting was to increase the visibility of women’s involvement in disciplines historically dominated by men. “It is essential to break stereotypes and demonstrate that girls possess the full potential to become scientists and engineers capable of transforming their environment,” emphasized the Rector.

Llera Pacheco noted that female participation in engineering fields remains lower compared to men. He pointed out that globally, for every girl studying engineering, there are two boys; however, in Mexico, this disparity is even wider, with approximately ten men for every two women in these careers.

Interactive Activities and Future Professionals

During the event, attendees had the opportunity to engage with cutting-edge technology, witness drone demonstrations, and participate in practical challenges related to STEM disciplines. The Rector expressed gratitude for the collaboration of UTPN students, faculty, and administrative staff, whose contributions made the activity possible. This initiative allowed participants to envision themselves as future professionals capable of driving positive change in society.

Through these actions, the Universidad Tecnológica Paso del Norte reaffirms its commitment to inclusive education, promoting knowledge from an early age, and strengthening its ties with the community in the northwest of Ciudad Juárez.
