Brugada Inaugurates Rehabilitated Piers in Xochimilco with 84 Million Pesos Investment

Mexico City, June 26, 2026 – After 15 days of World Cup activities in the Mexican capital, the Head of Government, Clara Brugada, officially opened the rehabilitated Nuevo Nativitas, Las Flores, and Zacapa piers in Xochimilco. This project, which involved an investment of 84 million pesos, was initially included in the Mexico City administration’s plans on May 27, 2025, as part of the city’s preparations for the tournament.

The inauguration ceremony took place on Thursday, June 25, where Brugada highlighted the significance of the works. The government allocated 84 million pesos to intervene 19,000 square meters and rebuild 88 commercial premises.

During the ceremony, Brugada stated, “The great legacy we can leave to this city is the profound recovery of the lake city and the natural life of Xochimilco.” She emphasized that the intervention directly benefits rowers, merchants, producers, musicians, and service providers, while also enhancing the experience for both national and international visitors.

Brugada also noted that the project has obtained zero net emissions certification and incorporates recycled materials, rainwater harvesting systems, and green infrastructure. Additionally, the area will feature a Hydrobotanical Tower designed to capture rainwater and return it to the aquifer.

Julia Álvarez Icaza, Secretary of the Environment, pointed out that the works were carried out in an area recognized as a Ramsar site and a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System by the FAO and UNESCO. She believes the intervention aims to consolidate a model of sustainable tourism.

Alejandra Fraustro Guerrero, Secretary of Tourism of Mexico City, was also present and specified that the investment from the lodging tax is directed towards projects that benefit the communities of rowers and chinamperos. She remarked, “It’s not just about not polluting, but regenerating life for those who give life to the entire city; from here comes our water, our oxygen, and above all, the joy of living.”

Last-Minute Works

This inauguration is one of several projects presented by the Brugada administration as part of the World Cup preparations, many of which were delivered against the clock or even after the tournament had already begun.

On June 3, in the week leading up to the opening match, the local leader inaugurated the remodeling of the Cuemanco Pier and the Cuemanco Artisans’ Market, an intervention with a 90 million peso investment.

On June 22, the capital’s leader inaugurated the Taxqueña, General Anaya, Ermita, and Portales stations of Line 2 of the Collective Transport System (STC) Metro. This occurred two weeks after their scheduled delivery date and when the World Cup had already accumulated 11 days of activities in Mexico City.
