“Artistic Paintings and Cartonería Expo” Kicks Off at Mexico City Congress

Mexico City, July 7, 2026 – The Mexico City Congress inaugurated the “Artistic Paintings and Cartonería Expo” on Tuesday as part of its initiatives to promote Mexico’s rich cultural heritage during the 2026 World Cup. The exhibition, which will run until Sunday, July 12, features works by artists and artisans from the State of Mexico, Guerrero, Michoacán, Oaxaca, and Veracruz.

The public can view the exhibition at the “Zócalo” building of the local Legislative Power, located at Plaza de la Constitución 7 in the Centro neighborhood, Cuauhtémoc borough. Admission is free.

A Showcase of Mexican Identity and Tradition

Artists and artisans from the participating states utilize color, forms, and various manual techniques to reflect the identity, history, culture, and traditions of their communities. The expo features 24 exhibition tables and more than 10 paintings.

Highlights include cultural expressions from communities in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Zautla, and Santiago Juxtlahuaca, as well as pieces from the Costa Chica of Oaxaca. These works employ diverse mediums such as oil, acrylic, engraving, mixed techniques, and cartonería.

Thirteen Artists Featured, Including Renowned Cartoneros

The exhibition brings together the most representative work of 13 Mexican artists. Among them are Agustín León Alcántara and Fernando Cerón Garduño, master cartoneros with distinguished careers in this artisanal expression. Other participating creators include Enoc León, known for integrating ancestral and Mesoamerican elements into his work, as well as Josué Cartilleros and Francisco Martínez Ramírez.

In addition to paintings and cartonería, the exhibition also includes traditional textiles made with backstrap looms, hand-embroidered dresses, tule basketry, and artisanal pieces made from cardboard, wood, and clay. Visitors can also attend talks about ancestral knowledge.

The exhibition is open to the public from 13:00 to 19:30 daily, from Tuesday, July 7, until Sunday, July 12.

World Cup 2026 and Cultural Promotion

The expo is strategically timed to coincide with the 2026 World Cup, offering both national and international visitors a unique opportunity to engage with Mexico’s vibrant artistic traditions. The Mexico City Congress aims to leverage this global event to highlight the country’s cultural diversity and artistic talent.

This initiative is one of several cultural activities organized by the capital’s Congress. Other recent events include the “2026 Edition of the State Congress of Theater of Mexico City” and ongoing training for legislative module staff on autism awareness.

The Mexico City Congress continues its commitment to fostering cultural exchange and making legislative spaces accessible for public engagement with art and tradition.
