El Niño Could Bring Drought to Mexico City by 2027, SMN Warns

Mexico City, July 9, 2026 – Following the onset of hurricane season and heavy rains across Mexico City and other states, the National Meteorological Service (SMN) today briefed President Claudia Sheinbaum on the potential impacts of the ‘El Niño’ phenomenon. This climatic event, marked by the irregular warming of surface waters in the Pacific Ocean, significantly influences hurricane formation and weather patterns across the country.

El Niño’s Intensification and Projected Impacts

The SMN forecasts that the current ‘El Niño’ event will intensify, leading to increased rainfall in northern Mexico by late 2026. However, a contrasting effect is predicted for central Mexico, where a drought could emerge in 2027. President Sheinbaum emphasized that while these are forecasts, the exact extent of the impact remains uncertain.
