Mexico City, July 9, 2026 – Following the onset of hurricane season and heavy rains across Mexico City and other states, the National Meteorological Service (SMN) today briefed President Claudia Sheinbaum on the potential impacts of the ‘El Niño’ phenomenon. This climatic event, marked by the irregular warming of surface waters in the Pacific Ocean, significantly influences hurricane formation and weather patterns across the country.
El Niño’s Intensification and Projected Impacts
The SMN forecasts that the current ‘El Niño’ event will intensify, leading to increased rainfall in northern Mexico by late 2026.
