Mexico City is preparing to host one of the country’s most representative cultural expressions with the arrival of the Guelaguetza 2026 in Azcapotzalco. For three days, the center of this borough will be the venue for a celebration dedicated to Oaxacan traditions, with activities combining music, dance, gastronomy, crafts, and the festive atmosphere that characterizes this festivity.
Azcapotzalco to Host Three-Day Oaxacan Cultural Extravaganza
The Guelaguetza festival, a vibrant celebration of Oaxacan culture, will take place in Mexico City’s Azcapotzalco borough from July 31 to August 2, 2026. The event, held at Jardín Hidalgo, promises to immerse visitors in the rich traditions of Oaxaca through a diverse program of activities.
“This space will be filled with gastronomy, tradition, colors, our music, our costumes, with much love for our traditions,” expressed Mayor Nancy Núñez in a promotional video, highlighting the essence of the upcoming festival.
The festival aims to bring the cultural richness of Oaxaca closer to Mexico City residents through artistic presentations and a wide display of typical products from its eight regions. Jardín Hidalgo will be the main stage for this edition, expecting the participation of musical groups, dancers, and artisans who will share their cultural heritage with the attending families.
The festival’s programming also includes activities for people of all ages and seeks to transform Azcapotzalco into a meeting point for those who wish to experience the Guelaguetza without leaving the capital.
When and Where to Enjoy the Guelaguetza in Azcapotzalco
Mayor Nancy Núñez announced that the 2026 Guelaguetza festival will be held from July 31 to August 2 at Jardín Hidalgo, one of the most emblematic spaces in the demarcation. Activities will commence at 12:00 PM and conclude at 8:00 PM throughout the three days of the festival. This venue will concentrate the artistic presentations, festive parades, and the gastronomic and artisanal offerings planned for this edition.
The choice of this location seeks to facilitate access for residents and visitors, in addition to leveraging a traditional meeting point in the municipality to host a celebration that stands out for its colorfulness and community participation.
A Feast for the Senses: Activities, Music, and Gastronomy
Among the most anticipated moments is the megacalenda, a festive parade accompanied by musical bands, marmots, mojigangas, and calenda monkeys that will fill the nearby streets with joy. The program also includes presentations of traditional dances from Oaxaca’s eight regions, live music, and a bazaar featuring typical products such as mezcal, coffee, moles, tlayudas, and pan de yema (egg bread).
For three days, the heart of Azcapotzalco will transform into a small Oaxaca, with regional costumes, traditional sounds, and a wide display of customs that have made the Guelaguetza one of Mexico’s most important and beloved cultural celebrations.
