Mexico City: ‘Water is Not for Sale, It is Defended’ March Reaches Zócalo
Mexico City, August 1, 2026 – A protest march, under the slogan “Water is Not for Sale, It is Defended!”, commenced this Saturday from the Estela de Luz in the Miguel Hidalgo borough and proceeded towards the Capital’s Zócalo. Personnel from Concertación Política CDMX closely monitored the demonstration.
Rejection of Water Cooperation Agreement Fuels Protest
The mobilization was primarily organized to voice opposition to a water cooperation agreement established between the Central Board of Water and Sanitation of Chihuahua and the Israeli International Development Cooperation Agency. According to the organizers, this agreement, signed in February 2023, is set to remain in effect until 2027. Its stated objective is the transfer of Israeli technology to enhance water efficiency.
Demonstrators have raised concerns that the agreement was not registered with either the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) or the Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMEXCID). This lack of registration, they argue, could constitute a violation of Mexican legislation concerning treaties.
Furthermore, participants expressed significant apprehension regarding what they perceive as a potential gateway to the privatization of water management in a region already grappling with water scarcity issues.

The report from Concertación Política CDMX indicated that approximately 400 individuals participated in the march, with numerous organizations joining the procession towards the Zócalo. Among the groups involved were:

Authorities Monitor the Peaceful Demonstration
Concertación Política CDMX personnel maintained a presence throughout the march to oversee its development and address any situations that might arise during the procession. The contingent continued its advance from Paseo de la Reforma towards the Zócalo, where the demonstration was expected to conclude peacefully.
