Mexico City, September 4, 2026 – The Mexico City government is set to significantly streamline the process of acquiring social interest housing, announcing plans to reduce administrative procedures by up to 50 percent. This initiative, spearheaded by Mayor Clara Brugada Molina, aims to make housing more accessible and affordable for residents, allowing them to obtain property in a “faster and cheaper” manner.
Major Administrative Simplification Underway
During the delivery of new apartments in the Azcapotzalco borough, Mayor Brugada revealed that a new administrative simplification package would be published in the coming days. This package will modify various regulations within the Ministry of Housing and the Housing Institute.
“We do not want the population to take years and years to be able to obtain housing,” stated the mayor, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to expediting the housing acquisition process. She also noted that efforts would be made to reduce the cost of these properties, which currently range between 900,000 and one million pesos.
Doubling the Housing Budget and Ambitious Goals
Mayor Brugada highlighted that her administration has doubled the annual budget allocated to housing, increasing it from 4.5 billion to 9 billion pesos. This substantial investment has already led to the construction of 10,000 homes within two years of her term, with a six-year goal of achieving 200,000 housing actions.
On September 3, Mayor Brugada personally handed over 59 apartments located at Santo Domingo 314. These units boast an average area of 60 square meters and are priced at approximately 900,000 pesos. This contrasts sharply with the private market, where, according to the mayor, similar properties can cost between 2 and 4 million pesos.
During the ceremony, Mayor Brugada urged beneficiaries to diligently fulfill their credit payment obligations. She explained that the recovery of these funds is crucial for financing new projects and extending housing opportunities to more families who currently lack property.
Broader Social Welfare Initiatives
In addition to the housing initiatives, Mayor Brugada also convened the Board of the Mexico City Care System at the Old City Hall Palace. This body is tasked with coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating public policies related to care services. Its immediate priority is to draft the regulations for the relevant law within a maximum of 90 days.
Lidia Rodríguez Chávez, the mayor’s former private secretary, was appointed as the technical secretary of the board. Mayor Brugada called upon all 16 boroughs to establish local bodies to articulate services for children, the elderly, people with disabilities, and caregivers.
Furthermore, the mayor announced her intention to send an initiative to the capital’s Congress to incorporate into the local Constitution the government’s obligation to guarantee early childhood education from the first days of life.
