Mexico City, September 7 – The Mexico City Electoral Institute (IECM) has officially approved the call to begin the 2026-2027 local ordinary electoral process. This significant announcement marks the start of a period where nearly eight million citizens will elect 286 public officials, including members of the Mexico City Congress, heads of the 16 mayoral offices, and their respective council members.
Formal Commencement and Call for Respectful Conduct
While the process formally began yesterday, September 7, the pre-campaign period for candidacies is slated to start on January 4, 2027. Patricia Avendaño, President Counselor of the IECM, emphasized the importance of all participants adhering to electoral regulations and timelines.
“We respectfully call upon political parties, candidates, their members, the general public, public officials, and all residents of this city to ensure that the competition takes place within the framework of the law,” Avendaño stated. She further urged adherence to rules concerning pre-campaigns, campaigns, financial oversight, propaganda placement, gender parity, affirmative actions, and the prevention and eradication of political violence against women.
Key Offices to be Elected
The upcoming election will see the renewal of 286 positions across Mexico City, reflecting a comprehensive democratic exercise:
- 66 Deputies to the Mexico City Congress: Comprising 33 by relative majority, 32 by proportional representation, and one migrant deputy.
- 16 Heads of Mayoral Offices: One for each of the city’s 16 territories.
- 204 Council Members: Supporting the mayoral offices.
Addressing the Challenges of Technology and Social Media
Avendaño also highlighted the contemporary challenges posed by technology and social media in electoral processes. She acknowledged their potential to broaden access to information but also warned about the increased risk of disseminating false or manipulated content.
“These media have profoundly transformed political communication and can expand access to information, but they can also facilitate the spread of false or manipulated content,” she noted. Avendaño stressed the need for responsibility from parties, candidates, authorities, media, and society to foster an informed and critical citizenry capable of distinguishing between legitimate debate and deliberate misinformation.

The IECM has outlined several crucial dates for the 2026-2027 electoral cycle:
