CIUDAD JUÁREZ, Chihuahua – The Chihuahua State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) has announced the burial of 117 unidentified and unclaimed bodies in a mass grave located in Ciudad Juárez. The interment, carried out by personnel from the Directorate of Forensic Services and Forensic Sciences, marks a significant step in managing the backlog of deceased individuals whose identities remain unknown.
Extensive Data Collection for Future Identification
Prior to their burial, comprehensive post-mortem data was collected for each of the 117 individuals. This meticulous process included obtaining genetic profiles, fingerprints, post-mortem photographs, details of clothing worn at the time of death, forensic odontology records, and necropsy results. These detailed records are intended to facilitate future identification should family members come forward to claim the remains.
Héctor Jácome Hernández, the coordinating expert for the Directorate of Forensic Services and Forensic Sciences in the Northern Zone, emphasized the thoroughness of the documentation process. “We have a complete file for each of the individuals, containing all available information that could aid in their identification,” he stated.
Demographics and Causes of Death Among the Deceased
The 117 bodies comprise adults, with a significant majority being male. Specifically, eight of the deceased were women, all of whom died of natural causes. Among the 109 men, 65 succumbed to natural causes, three died in accidents, and 41 met violent ends. This breakdown highlights the varied circumstances leading to the deaths of these individuals, with a notable proportion linked to violent incidents in the region.
The bodies had been held at the Forensic Medical Service (SEMEFO) for varying periods, with some dating back to 2022. The decision to proceed with burial was made after extensive efforts to identify and locate next of kin proved unsuccessful.
Individual Graves in San Rafael Municipal Pantheon
The interment took place in a dedicated area within the San Rafael Municipal Pantheon, where each of the 117 bodies was placed in an individual grave. This approach, while part of a mass grave initiative, ensures that each individual is afforded a respectful burial and that their remains can be potentially exhumed and identified in the future if new information emerges or DNA matches are made.
The process underscores the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in Ciudad Juárez and the wider Chihuahua state in dealing with unidentified human remains, a problem exacerbated by high rates of violence and migration in the region.
