Mexico City to Open ‘Canine Utopia’ Park with Pool, Gym, and Play Zones in Venustiano Carranza
Mexico City, September 15, 2026 – The Mexico City government announced plans for a new “Canine Utopia” park in the Venustiano Carranza borough, adjacent to the Mexico City International Airport (AICM). This expansive park will offer a range of amenities including a swimming pool, gymnasium, and various recreational areas designed for dogs and their families.
The project was unveiled on September 14 by Raúl Basulto Luviano, Secretary of Works and Services, during a press conference led by Head of Government Clara Brugada. The park aims to provide a dedicated space for canine recreation and family coexistence, managed by the capital’s government.
Location and Scope of the Canine Utopia
The “Canine Utopia” will be developed in a second phase, following the inauguration of the new Animal Care Center. The park will span approximately four hectares and will feature aquatic facilities, exercise zones, games, and open spaces for dogs to run, jump, and explore.
The designated plot for the Canine Welfare Utopia is located next to the new dog shelter constructed by the Mexico City government, specifically on Boulevard Puerto Aéreo within the Venustiano Carranza borough, close to the AICM.
Secretary Basulto Luviano stated that the land provides an additional four hectares beyond those allocated for the Animal Care Center, allowing for the development of this recreational space for pets. “Families will be able to bring their pets,” he affirmed during the presentation, emphasizing the park’s focus on physical activities and outdoor enjoyment for dogs and their owners.
Amenities for Dogs and Families
The Canine Utopia will be equipped with various installations for pets to engage in physical activity, play, and relax outdoors with their families. Key features will include:
- Aquatic Zones: A swimming pool for dogs, a splash pad, a fountain, and an artificial waterfall, designed for pets to cool off.
- Canine Gym: Structures for exercise and recreation, including areas for running, jumping, and navigating different circuits.
- Play Elements: Tunnels, balls, climbing zones, and a labyrinth to stimulate movement and play.
The park’s infrastructure is not solely for dogs; it will also cater to human visitors. The project includes children’s play areas, spaces for plastic arts activities, and general coexistence zones. Open-air forums will also be part of the proposal. Additionally, a cafeteria and seating areas will be available for families while their pets enjoy the facilities. The official intention is to combine animal welfare with activities for the people accompanying the dogs, creating a comprehensive recreational space.
New Animal Care Center and Adoption Platform
Adjacent to the future Utopia, the new Animal Care Center was nearing completion at the time of the announcement. Raúl Basulto Luviano indicated that its inauguration could take place on Thursday, September 17, or Friday, September 18. The center will occupy five hectares (50,000 square meters) with 6,400 square meters of construction, comprising 27 buildings, including 20 collective and individual canine living modules.
With a projected capacity for 600 dogs, the center will serve as a shelter and care facility, offering a canine medical module, veterinary services, and a volunteer center. It will also feature recreational and coexistence areas for animals to enjoy the outdoors. The project incorporates composting services and a wastewater treatment plant for reuse within the complex.
Head of Government Clara Brugada highlighted the Animal Care Center as one of the country’s largest public spaces dedicated to animal sheltering and refuge, emphasizing its role in expanding care for dogs in need of protection. The future Canine Utopia will complement the center, offering activities open to families with pets.
During the same conference, Clara Brugada announced the launch of the “Amar es Adoptar” (To Love is to Adopt) platform. This website allows citizens to view dogs from the Franciscan Shelter, the Animal Surveillance Brigade, and the Ajusco Shelter that are available for adoption. The platform will gradually incorporate more animals, enabling interested individuals to learn about their characteristics and choose a suitable pet for their family. The adoption process will include home visits and interactions with the dogs to ensure a viable match.
With the Animal Care Center nearing inauguration and the Canine Utopia planned for the adjacent land, the capital’s administration will consolidate a shelter for 600 dogs and a future park with a pool, gym, labyrinths, and family coexistence areas in Venustiano Carranza.
