Mexico City, September 23, 2026 – The United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has publicly stated that intelligence and information shared with Mexican authorities were crucial in the capture of José Ángel ‘N’, known as ‘Don Flaco’. The DEA identified ‘Don Flaco’ as a “maximum priority target” in its operations.

High-Profile Arrest in Cuauhtémoc Borough

The arrest was announced yesterday by Omar García Harfuch, head of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), who confirmed the detention of an individual sought by U.S. justice. ‘Don Flaco’ is accused of coordinating and financing an organization involved in the trafficking of chemical precursors from China to Mexico and the United States.

The joint operation involved the Attorney General’s Office, through the Criminal Investigation Agency (AIC), and the SSPC. The capture took place in the Cuauhtémoc borough of Mexico City. Secretary García Harfuch indicated that the apprehension was carried out in compliance with a provisional arrest warrant for extradition purposes.

DEA’s Statement on Social Media

The U.S. agency took to social media to emphasize its role in the operation. “DEA intelligence and information sharing helped Mexican authorities arrest José Ángel ‘N,’ one of the DEA’s highest-priority targets and alleged coordinator and financier of chemical precursor trafficking from China to Mexico and the United States,” the DEA posted.

The agency further affirmed its commitment to continued collaboration with Mexican authorities, whom it referred to as “our international partners.” This cooperation aims to disrupt the flow of chemicals, money, and criminal networks that facilitate the production of deadly synthetic drugs.

Ongoing Efforts Against Drug Trafficking

This arrest underscores the ongoing efforts by both U.S. and Mexican agencies to combat international drug trafficking. The focus on chemical precursors highlights a key aspect of modern drug production, particularly in the context of synthetic opioids and other illicit substances.

The collaborative nature of this operation, as emphasized by the DEA, points to a strategy of shared intelligence and coordinated action between countries to tackle complex criminal networks. The capture of ‘Don Flaco’ is expected to impact the supply chain of chemical precursors used in drug manufacturing.

Mexican authorities have not yet released further details regarding the extradition process or the specific charges ‘Don Flaco’ faces in the United States. However, the arrest is considered a significant development in the broader fight against drug cartels operating across North America.

The case also brings to light the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in tracking and intercepting the international movement of chemical components essential for drug production, a trade that often involves multiple countries and complex logistics.

This event follows other recent developments in the region, including discussions between Mexico and Brazil on consolidating health sovereignty and ongoing debates within Mexico regarding demographic trends and judicial reforms. The focus, however, remains on the immediate impact of ‘Don Flaco’s’ capture on the illicit drug trade.
