Mexico City, September 26 – Mexico City has solidified its position as the most competitive entity in Mexico, according to the 2026 edition of the State Competitiveness Index (ICE) released by the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO). This index, celebrating two decades of assessing states’ capacity to attract talent and investment, is composed of 53 indicators across six sub-indices, all based on public and comparable information.
Mexico City’s Dominance Across Key Sectors
The nation’s capital secured the top spot overall and distinguished itself individually in critical areas such as Innovation and Economy, boasting a GDP per capita of 545,000 pesos. It also led in the Infrastructure sub-index, thanks to its digital connectivity and financial penetration, and in Society and Environment due to its extensive coverage in health and secondary education.
Other States’ Performance and IMCO’s Insights
Elsewhere in the country, Querétaro advanced to the second national position, demonstrating very high competitiveness and ranking first in Political System and Governments. Nuevo León secured the third spot. Valeria Moy, IMCO’s Director General, emphasized the importance of continuity and evaluation for achieving profound transformations within federal entities.
Challenges and Priorities for the Future
Governors, including Samuel García of Nuevo León and Marina del Pilar Ávila of Baja California, highlighted current challenges in the face of the global economy. Among the priorities identified are attracting foreign investment, reducing informal labor, and transitioning towards a skilled workforce linked to advanced technologies.
This year’s IMCO report underscores Mexico City’s robust economic and social framework, positioning it as a magnet for both talent and investment. The findings provide valuable insights for policymakers and businesses looking to understand and leverage the competitive landscape of Mexico’s states.
