Mexico City is set to host a new event for fans of anime, manga, video games, cosplay, and Japanese culture. The inaugural Yokai MX Expo will take place on October 24 and 25, 2026, at Expo Reforma, offering a unique blend of contemporary pop culture with traditional Japanese folklore and aesthetics.
International Cosplayers and a Major Championship
The event will feature 12 cosplayers from eight different countries, including Japan, Russia, Germany, the United States, Estonia, Switzerland, Norway, and Luxembourg. A highlight of the expo will be the Cosplay Championship, boasting a prize pool of 80,000 pesos, which organizers state is the largest cash prize ever offered in such a competition within their project.
Exploring the World of Yokai
Beyond cosplay, Yokai MX Expo will introduce attendees to the fascinating world of yokai-supernatural beings and creatures deeply rooted in Japanese folklore and traditions. The first edition will include an exhibition of 11 yokai pieces, allowing visitors to explore various representations of these entities and delve into a facet of Japanese culture beyond anime and video games.
Immersive Japanese Ambiance and Art
The venue will be transformed to evoke elements of Japan, featuring torii gates-traditional structures associated with Shinto shrines. These gates will also serve as picturesque backdrops for photographs and interactions with the guest cosplayers. Complementing this immersive experience will be an exhibition of Japanese-inspired art, designed to enhance the visual appeal of the convention.
Over two days, the public will have the opportunity to meet international guests, participate in or witness the cosplay championship, explore the yokai exhibition and art displays, and enjoy various Japan-inspired settings.
