Mexico City: 14 Businesses Suspended, Two Arrested in Nightlife Crackdown

Mexico City, February 24 – Authorities in Mexico City have suspended 14 commercial establishments and permanently closed two others, resulting in the arrest of two individuals, following an operation targeting irregularities in nightlife venues. The actions were carried out between Thursday, February 19, and Saturday, February 21, as part of the “La Noche es de Todos” (The Night Belongs to Everyone) program.

The operation, led by the Mexico City Government Secretariat (SECGOB) in coordination with the Administrative Verification Institute (INVEA), the Citizen Security Secretariat (SSC), and the Secretariat of Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection (SGIRPC), aimed to strengthen citizen safety and institutional order in nocturnal businesses across six of the city’s boroughs.

Irregularities Detected and Sanctions Applied

During the verification visits, authorities identified numerous irregularities, including non-compliance with current regulations, as well as omissions in documentation and civil protection measures. These findings led to the imposition of corresponding legal sanctions.

Two individuals were arrested for the crime of seal tampering, a serious offense that occurs when official seals placed on a closed establishment are broken.

Boroughs and Neighborhoods Targeted

The operation focused on establishments located in the following boroughs:

  • Azcapotzalco
  • Benito Juárez
  • Coyoacán
  • Cuauhtémoc
  • Miguel Hidalgo
  • Xochimilco

Specific neighborhoods where patrols were conducted include:

  • Xalcotan
  • Carmen Serdán
  • El Mirador
  • San Andrés Ahuayucan
  • Nápoles
  • Narvarte
  • San José Insurgentes
  • Tacuba
  • Tlaxpana
  • Nueva España

These targeted areas reflect a strategic effort by authorities to address issues in various parts of the city’s diverse nightlife landscape.

Reinforcing Operations with Institutional Coordination

The Secretary of Government emphasized that these actions are part of a permanent strategy to supervise commercial activity and reinforce security conditions for the population. This multi-agency approach underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring a safe and orderly environment for both residents and visitors.

The Government of Mexico City, led by Clara Brugada Molina, reaffirmed its determination to apply the law responsibly and with institutional coordination, aiming to safeguard the security, coexistence, and tranquility of those who live in and visit the capital.

This operation follows previous successful initiatives under the “La Noche es de Todos” program. For instance, in January, the program concluded with 10 arrests for seal tampering, and earlier operations resulted in seven closures and eight suspensions of bars in Mexico City.

The increased enforcement reflects a broader effort by the city government to regulate commercial establishments, particularly those operating at night, to prevent illegal activities and ensure compliance with safety and operational standards. The continuous monitoring and swift action against non-compliant businesses are crucial for maintaining public order and safety in the bustling metropolis.

Authorities encourage citizens to report any irregularities or suspicious activities in commercial establishments to help maintain a safe and regulated environment for everyone.
