54 Femicides in Mexico City Hotels Over Eleven Years

Mexico City, May 1 – The Attorney General’s Office (FGJ) of Mexico City has reported 54 cases of femicide occurring in hotels and motels across the capital between 2015 and 2026. This alarming figure highlights a persistent issue within these establishments, with investigations indicating that at least 14 percent of all femicides in the city take place in such locations.

The primary cause of death in these cases is consistently identified as asphyxiation by strangulation or suffocation. The boroughs with the highest incidence of these crimes include Cuauhtémoc, Miguel Hidalgo, Benito Juárez, Venustiano Carranza, and Iztacalco.

FGJ Maintains 100% Effectiveness in Femicide Trials

Despite the concerning number of cases, the FGJ boasts a 100 percent effectiveness rate in femicide trials, with the majority concluding in condemnatory sentences. This commitment to justice is exemplified in the case of Rafael P.C., who was sentenced to 30 years in prison for aggravated femicide.

Case Study: Rafael P.C. Sentenced to 30 Years

On June 17, 2016, Rafael P.C. and the victim entered a hotel in the Obrera neighborhood, Cuauhtémoc borough, with alcoholic beverages. Hours later, a heated argument escalated into physical aggression. Rafael P.C. overpowered the victim, inflicting multiple stab wounds. Judicial reports indicate that he then covered the body and fled the room.

Subsequent investigations successfully identified Rafael P.C. as the perpetrator, leading to his arrest based on a warrant. Prosecutors at the Oriente Prison presented compelling evidence to the Trial Court, which issued a condemnatory sentence. In addition to the prison term, the court ordered Rafael P.C. to pay for physical and moral damages, as well as funeral expenses. He was denied any penal benefits or substitutes for the duration of his sentence and had his political rights suspended.

Protecting Minors: The Urgency of Registering Orphanhood Due to Femicide

The continuous occurrence of such crimes underscores the urgent need for measures to protect vulnerable populations, particularly children orphaned by femicide. The registration of orphanhood due to femicide is a critical step in ensuring these minors receive the necessary support and protection.
