Ciudad Juárez, August 19, 2026 – Adela Velarde Pérez, the woman from Ciudad Juárez whose name is forever linked to the ‘adelitas’ of the Mexican Revolution, will have a dedicated space in her honor in the heart of Ciudad Juárez’s Historic Center. The City Council has approved the designation of the pedestrian corridor on 16 de Septiembre Avenue, in front of the Museum of the Revolution on the Border (Muref), as ‘Adela Velarde Plaza.’
City Council Approves Historic Designation
The Nomenclature and Cultural Heritage Commission of the City Council officially approved the decree this morning, which is now pending ratification in the next Cabildo session. The initiative proposes naming the corridor, located between Benito Juárez and Francisco Villa avenues, after ‘La Adelita.’
Adela Velarde Pérez was born on September 8, 1900, in Ciudad Juárez, according to the cultural blog of the Government of Mexico. Her name was immortalized in one of the most emblematic revolutionary corridos of that historical period.
‘La Adelita’: A Symbol of Courageous Women
Adela Velarde lent her name to the women who, during the Revolution, attended to the wounded, carried weapons, managed provisions, and even fought when necessary. These ‘adelitas’ became a powerful symbol of women who faced adversity with immense courage and resilience.
Since 1971, her remains have rested in the San Felipe cemetery in Del Río, Texas, where an annual tribute is paid to the woman who inspired one of Mexico’s most well-known and cherished revolutionary songs.
Commemoration and Future Plans
As part of the agreement with representatives from the Ciudad Juárez City Council, a commemorative plaque will also be placed in front of the Muref. This location is intended to become a site for an annual commemoration on September 8, her birthday, ensuring she receives the recognition she deserves.
Councilman Mauricio Padilla, coordinator of the City Council’s Nomenclature Commission, highlighted that Adela Velarde’s home was located in the Historic Center itself. The proposal for the plaza was championed by the office for the Revitalization of the Foundational Center of Ciudad Juárez.
This initiative is part of broader efforts to revitalize the Historic Center. Recently, the municipality demolished two properties in the area due to collapse risk and illicit activities, and the city also saw a march in defense of the people of Palestine and the arrival of the XXXI Gran Cabalgata Villista, both passing through the Historic Center.
