Mexico City, July 22, 2026 – BBVA Mexico and the Government of Mexico City (CDMX) have jointly launched an innovative technological platform designed to monitor the consumption patterns of international tourists. This unique solution, unveiled during a press conference led by Mexico City’s Head of Government, Clara Brugada Molina, provides granular data on foreign visitor spending, particularly highlighting the economic impact of the recent World Cup.
Significant Surge in Digital Spending by International Tourists
The platform, leveraging data from BBVA Mexico’s extensive network of point-of-sale (POS) terminals, has revealed a substantial 61.2% surge in digital spending by international tourists in June 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. This significant increase underscores the dynamism of specific services and the widespread use of bank cards from 84 different countries, detected across both local networks and the capital’s transportation systems.
Emilio Ferrer Burges, Divisional Director of Government Banking at BBVA Mexico, emphasized the platform’s strategic importance: “The integration of our payment infrastructure into the CDMX Transparency portal provides traceability on the economic flow generated by international visitors. This level of detail is an essential element for sectoral analysis and informed decision-making.”
Comprehensive Economic Overview
The insights from this platform complement the broader economic panorama presented by the CDMX Ministry of Administration and Finance, headed by Juan Pablo de Botton Falcón. According to the official report, the total volume of banking transactions in the capital during June 2026 reached 193 billion pesos, marking a net increase of 44 billion pesos, or 30% higher than the 149 billion pesos recorded in June 2025.
Furthermore, this digital activity spurred a greater frequency in the use of financial services, with 121 million additional transactions processed compared to the previous year, representing a 44.7% increase in the volume of operations.
It is crucial to note that the information on this platform exclusively focuses on the transactional activity of international visitors. These data serve as a complement to the consumption studies periodically conducted by BBVA Research. While this tool concentrates on foreign tourist spending behavior at POS terminals, BBVA Research continues to monitor aggregate private consumption by households, influenced by factors such as employment trends and real wage mass.
Public Access and Future Implications
The public consultation tool is now accessible at https://plataforma.transparencia.cdmx.gob.mx/actividad-economica. This initiative was presented at a press conference attended by key officials, including Manola Zabalza Aldama, Secretary of Economic Development; Eréndira Cruzvillegas Fuentes, Legal and Services Advisor; Ana María Lomelí Robles, General Coordinator of Citizen Communication; and representatives from various industry associations such as ANTAD (Diego Cosío Pardo) and CANACO Ciudad de México (Vicente Gutiérrez Camposeco).
