Mexico City, August 29 – An incident involving a bus carrying 30 students from the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos (UAEM) has prompted the institution to demand a thorough investigation. The bus, operated by Transportes Estrella Roja and intended for a route from Chamilpa to Cuautla, was unexpectedly diverted and ended up in Mexico City.
UAEM Activates Security Protocols After Diversion
The incident came to light last night through videos posted by students. Upon learning of the situation, the UAEM immediately activated its security protocols to locate the unit and ensure the safe return of its students.
“Following the events that occurred on Friday night, the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos (UAEM) reports that the 30 students traveling in unit 3088 of the Transportes Estrella Roja company are well and are returning to their homes,” stated the official university announcement.
The university confirmed that the bus, which provides student transport services from Chamilpa to Cuautla, took a different route than planned. As soon as the university became aware of the situation, its “Venados” security personnel initiated a search and localization effort for the unit.
University Demands Explanation and Investigation
In parallel with the search, the UAEM established communication with Transportes Estrella Roja to obtain clarification regarding the incident and to coordinate the bus’s return to its intended route towards Cuautla.
“Once the unit was located, Venados personnel established contact with the students and escorted them during their return, maintaining permanent monitoring to ensure their safety,” the university affirmed.
During the bus’s return to the state of Morelos, security personnel from the UAEM provided continuous oversight at each stop along the route. The university emphasized that its priority throughout the incident was the localization and safeguarding of the students, and it maintained close follow-up until all students had safely reached their families.
The UAEM is now pressing for a comprehensive investigation to determine the causes of the diversion and to assign responsibilities where appropriate. “Due to these circumstances, the University demands an exhaustive investigation and, if applicable, the delimitation and establishment of the corresponding responsibilities,” stated the institution.
The university reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of its community.
Student Federation Contacts Transport Company for Clarification
In response to the incident, the Federation of University Students of Morelos (FEUM) also contacted the manager of Transportes Estrella Roja to understand what transpired.
“Regarding the situation reported tonight concerning a Transportes Estrella Roja (TER) unit, the Federation of University Students of Morelos promptly established communication with the line manager to directly ascertain what happened,” the FEUM communicated.
The transport company informed the FEUM that the incident was due to a recently hired driver who, through confusion, took an incorrect route. The company has acknowledged the situation and stated that internal measures will be taken.
“Immediately, various alternatives were offered to the students to ensure their safe transfer home, as well as attention and follow-up during the coming week,” explained the Federation.
The FEUM emphasized that the safety of students is a priority and that they will be closely monitoring the situation to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The Federation also extended gratitude to those who reported the incident and to the students involved for keeping them informed, stating that they will remain vigilant until the matter is fully resolved.
